For the Fn + F5 (its F5 on my computer, might be different on yours) to change the brightness you have to have the Samsung "Easy Display Manager" installed. Check to see that the program is still installed. If its not installed goto the Samsung website look up the model of your computer and it will display all the software dowloads that were pre-installed on your model of PC, if you need to you can download the "Easy display manager" again, once installed reboot you system and Fn + F5 should work again.

I am not sure I fixed everything, but I am finally able to adjust my brightness. I used my model number, NP88OZ5E and went to the Samsung website. I downloaded SW update and used it to download a myriad of new drivers and updates. It took quite a while. I still can't use my Fn keys to adjust brightness (I am missing that "easy display manager" program you referred to and I can't figure out how to find it, though I looked), but it works now when I use the control panel to adjust brightness now.

Thanks for all the help with what I am sure is normally very basic stuff. I feel a little smarter now at least. If you have any more suggestions for me, I am happy to hear them. If not, then thanks again.

I have a Samsung N210 Plus laptop which developed the same problem you were having,no brightness control. This happened a few years ago. The LCD display was on full brightness all of the time, which made using it uncomfotable on my eyes. This appears to be an issue with Samsung. The problem started just after the guarantee had expired. I also tried all different ways to sort the problem out, nothing worked. I contacted Samsung and spent over half an hour on the telephone, with a technician. We got the brightness control working. Next time I switched on the laptop it had gone back to full brightness with no conrol. I stopped using the laptop until I found out about f.lux. This program auto adjusts the brightness, you can also manually adjust the brightness with ( Alt-PageUp or Alt-Page Down).

My problem was the same: all Fn buttons had worked fine, except brightness buttons. All the same I was not able to change the brightness in windows control panel (brightness adjustment was missing) and in samsung control center (nothing happened when moved the brightness adjustment).

Check programs that can "override" your screen. My problem was TeamViewer 13. Don't know how TeamViewer had been overriding brightness settings, but when I had deleted it, Fn-buttons for brightness were on.

I have a Dell XPS 13 (9350) running Windows 10 and I can't seem to disable the automatic brightness changing depending on what's on the screen. If the screen is primarily light the brightness will go up, and when it's primarily dark it'll dim. I'm having the same issue as outlined in these posts:

but none of the solutions given worked for me. In my Intel HD Graphics control panel there is no "Display Power Saving Technology" option, nor are there "On Battery" or "Plugged In" tabs in the power section. This problem persists on both battery and AC.

For me I had to disable it by right-clicking on the desktop and choosing "Intel(R) Graphics Control Panel" (it's only accessible from the desktop, not the Start Menu). "Power", "Display Power Saving Technology", "Disable". Hope that helps someone.

Intel Display Power Saving Technology (DPST), sometimes called "adaptive brightness", is a feature of some Intel graphics chips that automatically adjusts the screen brightness based on what is shown on the screen.

On Desktop PC, Nvidia gtx 1060, after a full day of trying to change the windows 10 power settings and after searching for registry solution on the net to stop changes in brightness depending on the screen contents and after a full day trying to solve this anti-usability "feature" , poor PC display stability due to this stupid auto-brightness, auto-dynamic-contrast , Adaptive Brightness persisted. lost a full day with settings, registry tweaking and so on hoping to solve this issue and to disable Adaptive Brightness, Adaptive Contrast .

I finally found a fix for this. The setting is in the "Intel Graphics Command Center", which you can hopefully find by searching under the Start Menu. In the Command Center, hit the System tab on the left (the one with 4 boxes), and then click the Power tab at the top. Turn all this stuff off. Or just turn off the "Display Power Savings" option - that's the one that dims the screen when dark content is shown.

As the title stats my screen max brightness had been lowered quite a bit and after messing around with power settings, going to the manufactures website to download another graphics driver, using Google and searching through forums I find myself here wondering what to do next.

My biggest success/temporary fix came from downloading and installing the lenovo recommended driver for windows 8.1(Intel Extreme Graphics Driver) which restored my screen it its full brightness for about 10 minutes before crushing my hoped by reverting back into darkness, of course I checked the settings again and removed/reinstalled the driver a few times and got similar results each time so I decided to seek out professional assistance if possible.

Well some of the laptops have brighness settings in bios setup. For instance dell always have brighness settings under video tab. There you can increase and decrease the brighness. Press F2 go to setup and find video and then ac and dc brighness. Good Luck

I was looking for the answer and found the error because mine was doing the same thing.
Go to Power Options and then "display" and then unclick where it says to adjust the brightness right under the brightness bar.

I had similar problems with my sis laptop and after all and all going through all the settings even taking it to a technical specialists of which none of them could still find the problem, so there final suggestions was to change the motherboard

The only thing that worked was to go to Device Manager > Display adapters > and disabling whatever graphics you are using. That will half solve the problem... because you won't be able to adjust the brightness.

I found that Lenovo laptops have a keystroke that instantly zaps your brightness I never remember what is it until I have done it.I restart laptop, then when the 'Lenovo' logo appears, press the +brightness button. For me it brings the brightness right back to normal.

For me, the problem was with the Intel Graphics Power Plan settings, which is located in power options, POWER PLAN, change plan settings, change advanced power settings. the problem was my power plan on battery was set to something other than Maximum Performance. I set it to Maximum Performance on both options and all powerplans and now my laptop brightness is fixed to maximum. hope it helps.

Problem is not in settings for brightness its actualy in driver settings for display , Just click right click and pick graphic setting , then u will find monitor looking icon there and u will see setting for colors , and under colors u should have 3 bars with light , contrast and gama ....those are actualy what makes your screen not so bright ;)

I disabled the integrated graphics chip on my computer which dimmed my brightness significantly. I did this in the first place to fix a game rendering and just turned it back on and my brightness was fixed.

Y'all, my screen brightness setting was not working worth a darn and then i noticed that I could also adjust it by using the keys on the bottom of my monitor. That is what worked for me. I almost ripped my hair out and beat the computer into pieces.

both amdgpu and nvidia are listed in backlight but
modification of amdgpu_bl1/brightness only changes the brightness of my screen and the most intimidating this is
I have to switch to superuser inorder to control the backlight

Ubuntu seems to think there was a brightness up / down keypress randomly (Fn + Up arrow or Fn + Down arrow) even when I am not touching the laptop's keyboard. When I turn the laptop off it shows as if a key was pressed.

EDIT: Note that this is not a permanent fix as 10-quirks.conf is a file frequently overwritten by OS updates. The most recent update at this time of writing, released on the 7th of August, had overwritten this file and the above-mentioned script was not retained. To fix it back again, you'll just have to type it back in again, or submit a bug report informing them about this fix.

I recently switched to SwayWM/Wayland, and the config provided by a different answer no longer worked for me (since it only applies to X11). I asked around and was notified of a fix for SwayWM, specifically disabling input events from the "Video Bus".

I think I see this also. The screen looks like it is doing a small flicker every now and then.
If I put a finger over the sensor located at the top center of the screen, near the camera enable/disable switches. The screen gets dimmer, if I remove my finger, the screen gets brighter again.
I am on Ubuntu 24.04, to disable the auto-brightness feature, go to Settings->Power->Power Saving - Automatic Screen Brightness

To fix this issue, go into Power Options, Edit Plan Settings of the active plan, set Change plan brightness to the maximum for both battery and plugged in. You can access the same setting under Change advanced power settings, Display, Display Brightness.

Are you running the Intel Graphics Control Panel? Within that control panel is a power plan as well. You would need to access that and modify the settings there. That might be overriding the Windows settings.

Depending on how bright or dark the content of my Photoshop file is, my screen (laptop running Windows 10) will get brighter or darker. This is especially noticeable when I zoom in or out on an image. Never had this before on previous laptops.

I have a new Dell XPS with Windows 10 pro. It is so annoying, I disabled the Windows auto brightness adjust but it keeps changing. For me it is most noticable if I am zoomed out and I just move my mouse outside my workspaces.
