The album name is in reference to a quote by Don Henley after the band's breakup in 1980. Henley was asked in an interview about when the band would play together again, to which he responded "when Hell freezes over".[5] Glenn Frey also said in 1982 on the break-up: "I just rule out the possibility of putting the Eagles back together for a Lost Youth and Greed tour."[6]
Though they kept it quiet for many months afterward, the Eagles were done. Don Henley was categorical, citing the old adage that the band would get back together "when hell freezes over." Speaking to People in 1982, Frey remarked: I just rule out the possibility of putting the Eagles back together for a Lost Youth and Greed tour."
That music video shoot served as the impetus for the Eagles to consider a reunion. Only two months later, Frey and Henley had lunch with their management team and agreed to formally reunite. They performed live for the first time in April, at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, Calif., where they shot The Eagles: Hell Freezes Over -- given its name because Henley was known for saying after their split that the band would get back together "when hell freezes over" -- for an MTV special.
