what does the string "sil" mean?

may be  it is a low question. but it is difficlut to study the script prepare_lang.sh
in the egs yesno, under the dir "data/local/dict" , there is a file  "silence_phones.txt"
in the explan-note it is "silence includes various kinds of noise, laugh, cough, filled pauses etc.,"  , the file content is the str "sil", what does it mean ,does it mean noise or pauses or others?

In short, whatever is specified in optional_silence.txt will learn to eat everything what is in between annotated words (and events or noises) in the transcript. 
For meaning of what is annotated you would have to go to corpus documentation, where these things should be defined well (because annotators need to understand what they are doing as well).
