Dear friends,

You are cordially invited to attend the next Kalamazoo Interfaith Forum on Sunday, September 14, 2014.

Location:

Gurdwara Singh Sabha Kalamazoo
5828 Cheshire St.
Portage, Michigan

Time:

4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Topic: Death Penalty

I hope everyone had a nice summer. KIF took a fourth-month hiatus, May through August

Back in April, we had originally intended to discuss the death penalty, but wound up talking about something else instead. So, if we'd like, we could use the death penalty for our topic this Sunday. Below, I forwarded an advertisement from an interfaith discussion that took place earlier this year in Arizona that might help us reflect on how the death penalty is understood from our perspectives as people who are informed by a religious faith, philosophical system or other particular worldview. To my knowledge, this would be a new topic for our group.

We will follow our usual format this Sunday: Each participant will give a 5 to 7 minute explanation of her or his perspective on the death penalty and a group discussion will follow.

Thanks to the Sikh community at Gurdwara Singh Sabha for hosting us.

Sincerely,

Neil Chase

You and your friends are invited to a Community Faith Forum, entitled
"The Death Penalty"

AN EYE FOR AN EYE: THE DEATH PENALTY - Is the death penalty a viable punishment according to your faith - or should the criminal's punishment be left to a "higher authority?" Does society have the right to "take a life" as a form of retribution? What does your faith say about crime and punishment in general? Join us as our panelists discuss this issue.

We are pleased to offer Community Faith Forums, monthly, through the school year, to discuss topics of the day together, listening and considering many different perspectives. It's a great way to learn, in a respectful manner, and have a sounder basis for your own viewpoints.

We hope you will tell your friends and plan to join us, the 3rd Tuesday of the month, at lunch time. If you cannot attend, please check back as we generally post a video of the program that you can catch when it works for you!

Program - 6-8 minutes presentation by each InterFaith panelist, followed by Q & A with the attendees

We thank our Panelists: (See bios / details on our website!)
- Dan Peitzmeyer, with "Death Penalty Alternatives"
- Ernie Bruss, Baha'i
- Holly / Nick Janicki, Falun Dafa
- Imam Khalil Sultan, Islam

Event Details:
Date: Tuesday, April 8th
Time: 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 pm - feel free to bring your lunch
Parking: Free parking next to building
Location: Arizona Jewish Historical Society, 122 E. Culver Street, Phoenix
Directions: On East McDowell, turn south on 2nd Street and come a couple of blocks to Culver - turn by our AIFM sign into the parking lot.

As a service to our community we offer these public forums for learning and discussion, but AIFM doesn't take positions or "sides" on an issue.  We do provide a balance of faith perspectives so we can really have great food for thought and discussion in a thoughtful and respectful way. Please help spread the word about this community forum - thank you!  We hope to see you there.

For further information, a map to the event, please CLICK HERE, or call Nancy at our AIFM office, 602-261-6705.  We look forward to seeing you there.
