Can anyone recommend a bootable antivirus scanning tool that can scan the PC without loading the operating system and obtain updated definitions prior to scanning? I think this will be our safest bet but there are a ton of options (Sophos, Kaspersky, AVG, etc) and I am looking for a recommendation.
combofix will delete anything it says is infected\tampered with. so it can delete parts of the MBR or even registry if the virus has tampered with them.- note ive never experienced any true damage from combofix but it can happen.
also note that i dont actually bother doing these things any more as virus removal is not a true solution if you are compromised. its better to completely reinstall the OS and fully scan the data you backed up before reloading it on to the new machine. i used to do more virus removals when i worked in a repair shop as thats how they do business.
