Elizabethdiscovered this Elna Junior Sewing Machine in the I-70 Antique Mall in Springfield, Ohio. She quickly pointed it out to jim knowing his affection for Elna sewing machines. This is the first (and only) child's or Junior Elna we had ever seen. As such, we knew nothing about the Junior. Jim turned the hand crank and the needle bar went up and down and the thing that makes the chain-stitches on the base went around so we figured that was all that needed to happen. It even came with the tin case which we knew was a plus. In our haste and excitement we grabbed it, paid a whole lot more for it that it is worth, and left.
This Elna Junior is a working miniature travel sewing machine that was made in Switzerland. The tiny sewing machine was made for travel or smaller repairs. It was donated to the museum as part of the Birk Petersen collection, but the sewing machine was made by Elna.
Mr. Petersen created a vast array of projects over his lifetime, ranging from miniature engines to hand-cranked animations and more. He built functional miniatures like a 1/3 scale Gatling gun or a 1/4 scale Case steam tractor, but he also built mechanical creations for the fun and enjoyment of his family. When Birk passed away in 2015, his family graciously donated over 150 items from his collection for display at the Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship Museum, where they are currently on display. We thank the Petersen family for sharing his extensive collection, which demonstrates the broad interests and many talents of Birk Petersen.

Do you remember the first machine you started sewing on? We asked our Facebook fans to share stories about their first time sewing and their first sewing machine. Did you start on any of these machines?
My mom taught me how to sew. When she bought her Singer with all the fancy disks, she bought me my first beige crinkle hand crank toy Singer. I still have it today and my mom's. Also have my Grandma's Singer treadle machine.
I started sewing on a treadle in my sewing class in Junior high. No one wanted to use the treadle, so I decided to use one of them. Since no one else wanted to use the 2 in the classroom, I could use it as long as I wanted and every day. I am 72 years old and I have my great grandmother's Singer treadle in my home. I have modern machines, but it is my choice machine. I have many attachments and even a button holer.
I had a "White" sewing machine at age 11, and it was the best machine I have ever owned. I love my Brother Project Runway machine, it is awesome. But that White was smooth sewing with a purring motor. I miss it.
I learned to sew on my mum's treadle machine. I'm still sewing at80 years old. And I have sewing machines ... 2 embroidery, a Husqvarna 911 and a newer Husqvarna. I teach all the girls in the neighborhood how to sew. I leaned from the grandmother of the 2 boys next door.. their mum was a teacher who went to school in the summer. I spent all my time with Grandma Dexter! good, fond memories!
Elna is a Swiss brand and former manufacturer of textile machines, including fabric presses and sewing, overlock and coverstitch machines.[2][3][4][5][6] Elna sewing machines are included in the collections of the Museum of Design, Zrich, Tekniska museet, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art.[7][8][9][10]
The firm began as Ateliers Mcaniques de Prcision Tavaro SA, founded as an export division of the Tavannes Watch Company (today part of Sandoz).[11] The company was known for high-quality clockwork artillery fuzes, which saw use most notably in the German 88mm anti-aircraft gun. Tavaro was once responsible for a full 11% of Swiss military sales to Nazi Germany.[12]
When the Swiss federal government restricted, then banned, exports of war materiel, Tavaro shifted to peaceful industry. At first, the factory exported watch parts & movements to the United Kingdom, in violation of wartime trade restrictions, for which the firm was recognized by the British government.[13]
Tavaro's first sewing machine had no official name, just a model number (500890); but it was consistently referred to in sales literature simply as Elna (without a definite article).[14][7] The creation of Dr. Ramon Casas Robert,[a] a Spanish engineer, a working prototype was reportedly complete as early as 1934, but development was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War, and Casas was forced to emigrate to Switzerland.[15] Living in a Geneva hotel room, lacking capital or equipment, Casas sold his patents to Tavaro through a holding company, and the first Elnas left the factory in 1940. With most of Europe's manufacturing economy still devastated, Elna's market position was very favorable as post-war demand for sewing machines rose. Within a year, Elna International Corp. SA had been entered into the cantonal company register, though export did not begin in earnest until after the end of the war.[15][16][17][1]
