Traditional Korean Homes to Be Built in Uijeongbu
Chosun Ilbo, October 29th 2008

The Korea National Housing Corporation will build a massive complex of
traditional Korean houses in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province. The KNHC
has launched a New Hanok Village project to build about 50 of the
houses in the city.

There has been a boom to expand or renovate traditional houses in
Seoul’s Samcheong-dong and Gahoe-dong over the past few years, which
the government has supported. But most hanok projects have focused on
designating "exemplary villages" or restoring dilapidated ones. This
is the first time such a massive complex is being built, in testimony
to the resurgent reputation of their sustainable design.

A participant in the project on Tuesday said, "The KNHC has begun the
new hanok village project with a view to introducing a new housing
culture. We are going to offer prizes to experts or students who can
present the best ideas and designs."

The KNHC said the focus of the project is to give people easy access
to hanok as practical, habitable future-oriented housing units, rather
than maintaining them as mere historical curiosities.
