Hi - thanks for the input. I am using Endnote 6 because that is what I have! And it works fine for what I have to do with it normally. But right now I am trying to import a library from my boss. He has a newer versionof Endnote on his computer, which is a Mac. Mine is a PC. Could this be part of the problem?
Mac and PC actually have different handling of ASCII text file, in terms of line feed and carriage return. But most of the recent software absorb this kind of difference so that text files are independent of platform.
Converting a Library for ProCite, Reference Manager, or an Earlier Version
of EndNote
Converting an EndNote 9 library for use with EndNote versions 5, 6, or 7,
for Reference Manager, or for ProCite requires exporting the references from
your EndNote library to a text file, and then importing from the text file
into the other program.
If your references contain diacritics, you must do this carefully so that
your diacritics transfer correctly. Because EndNote 9 is Unicode compliant,
it exports text as UTF-8 Unicode, and not as traditional ANSI text.
Reference Manager, ProCite, and earlier versions of EndNote are not Unicode
compatible, so they need the document converted to ANSI text. If you attempt
to import references that have not been saved as ANSI text, diacritics will
appear scrambled in the new database or library format.
Note: EndNote 9 allows the use of Extended Latin and double-byte character
sets, which are not supported by EndNote versions earlier than version 8.
Extended Latin and double-byte characters will not transfer to earlier
version file formats.
To convert your EndNote 9 library for other applications:
In EndNote 9, go to the drop-down output style list on the toolbar, and
choose Select Another Style. Highlight and Choose the appropriate output
style:
You can use them independently, or synchronise them so you can work with your EndNote references from any device: your own computer, on the Web or on your iPad. The Web and iPad versions do not have all the functionality of EndNote Desktop.
EndNote Desktop can also be used on Apple Mac computers - both Intel-based and Apple Silicon-based Macs. Macs manufactured from late 2020 onwards have Apple Silicon-based processors in them. Older Macs, pre-late 2020, were manufactured with Intel-based processors. The type of processor you have may affect how EndNote functions on your Mac.
Mac OS 14 (also known as Sonoma) is the latest version of the OS operating system. EndNote 21 is the latest version of the software. It is compatible with Mac OS Sonoma. EndNote 20 and earlier were not designed for Sonoma and so Clarivate suggest that users upgrade to EndNote 21.
In EndNote 21, you can open and use libraries created in EndNote 20, and vice versa. If you use EndNote 20 to open an EndNote 21 library that includes 'Tags', you will not see the Tags because the Tags feature was introduced with version 21.
Clarivate introduced a new database engine from EndNote X9.3 onwards, so EndNote libraries created in versions X9.3, 20 or 21 are not backwardly compatible with older versions of EndNote. When you use EndNote X9.3, 20 or 21 to open a library that was created in an earlier version, you will be prompted to create a new converted library.
I would second that. We are increasingly being approached by open-office users, and having to direct them to Zotero and other compatible products. It would make it much easier for users shifting between home and office/study if EndNote was compatible with open-office.
Definitely agree that Linux & full OpenOffice.org integration would be extremely useful. I work in two very large organisations whose IT directorates are beginning to consider moves to Linux & open source software for many thousands of desktops. Any products that are compatible in that environment would have a significant competitve advantage.
EndNote for Linux and OpenOffice is a MUST. How long will we have to wait to have a software which fits scientists reality ! More and more users switch to Linux (Thanks Vista) and the Microsoft Office 2007 format is not even accepted by Journals so that OpenOffice is now a real and useful solution for serious scientists.
I see that the original post in this thread is dated 04-09-2008, but I do not see any response from the EndNote team three months later. Should users assume that a linux and/or openoffice version is not under development, and should look elsewhere?
We are currently researching options for EndNote CWYW-like integration for OpenOffice Writer. There are no specific plans for a UNIX-native version of EndNote. EndNote currently works through WINE on Linux and EndNote Web works with a UNIX web browser such as Firefox.
I was under the impression that Endnote support under Wine or Crossover was problematic. Is that not true? Does CWYWrite work correctly? I imagine MSOffice support under Wine and Crossover would affect the equation as well.
I understand that the Linux market is small compared to the Windows market, but I am very encouraged and very interested in progress on a version of Endnote that is functional for OpenOffice just as Endnote currently is with MSOffice. Of course, I would prefer a Linux native version of Endnote for OpenOffice!
I also find that creating an MS Office-based product with at least similar functionality as EndNote can be accomplished with relative ease using visual basic for applications within MS Office (with Access as the database backend).
As far as support for OpenOffice would be concerned, I came across Citavi (
citavi.com) from Swiss Academic Software that supports OpenOffice 3/StarOffice 9 as of its 2.4.7 version. They have also announced an English version release with their upcoming 2.5 version in 2009. The information provided at thier web site (currently in German) is very promising and I am curious if anyone here has already tried Citavi with OpenOffice/StarOffice. Like EndNote, Citavi allows access to online reference sources, and allows for regular expressions (Regex) in their searches.
EndNote 21 delivers an even better experience with an improved online interface and access - even away from the desktop. With EndNote 21, you will: With the new version of EndNote, your organization benefits from:
Power your organization's research with a robust system you can count on. The same power and flexibility researchers trust, modernized for ease of use. With the new version of EndNote, your organization benefits from:
There are several ways to add a reference to a library: manually, or by exporting, importing, copying from another EndNote library, or connecting from EndNote. The program presents the user with a window containing a dropdown menu from which to select the type of reference they require (e.g., book, congressional legislation, film, newspaper article, etc.), and fields ranging from the general (author, title, year) to those specific to the kind of reference (abstract, author, ISBN, running time, etc.)
Most bibliographic databases allow users to export references into their EndNote libraries. This enables the user to select multiple citations and saves the user from having to manually enter citation information and abstracts of papers. Some databases (e.g., PubMed) require the user to select citations, select a specific format, and save them as .txt files. The user can then import the citations into the EndNote software. It is also possible to search library catalogs and free databases, such as PubMed, from within the EndNote software program itself.
If the user fills out the necessary fields, EndNote can automatically format the citation into any of over 2,000 different styles the user chooses. For example, listed below are some citations from Gray's Anatomy using several different styles:
EndNote can export citation libraries as HTML, plain text, Rich Text Format, or XML.From version X.7.2, one library can be shared with up to 14 other EndNote users. The data is synchronized via the EndNote cloud service, with everybody having full write access to the library.[2]
EndNote can also organize PDFs on the user's hard drive (or full text on the web) through links to files or by inserting copies of PDFs. It is also possible to save a single image, document, Excel spreadsheet, or other file type to each reference in an EndNote library. Starting from EndNote X version 1.0.1, formatting support for OpenDocument files (ODT) using the Format Paper command is supported.
The problem can only be circumvented by re-launcing Endnote, or by selecting References > Show all references prior to each search query. As I am currently checking the references in a 1000 page manuscript, you can imagine how this is driving me mad. Please provide a solution, or tell me how to revert to the old version of X7.
This issue did exist in version X7, so what you are seeing may be a different problem although its symptoms appear to be the same. Can you please send me an e-mail documenting your exact steps (screenshots would also be helpful) so we can do some further investigation.
Please keep an eye out for an update, X7.2, to be released on both Mac and Windows this Fall. Amongst other new features and improvements, the issue you refer to with searching within the desktop will be addressed.
I have been working on an endnote library for weeks, closing and opening it without any issues. It had clearly saved. However, yesterday, I was working on it and it crashed. Now, when I reopen it, it is back to the original version, and all my work is lost. I have looked everywhere on my computer trying to find another version of the file to no avail.
