XLink Kai is a multi-platform and peer-to-peer LAN tunneling service which enables users to play system-link / LAN and ad-hoc multiplayer games on their consoles online with people all over the world. XLink Kai was first released in 2003, supporting the Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube at launch, with PSP, PS3, Xbox 360 and others support arriving soon after.

To begin, you'll need to register for an XLink Kai account and download the program. Click on 'Sign Up' at the top of the XLink Kai home page and fill in your details, then click Submit. You then need to verify your email address and consent to the XLink Kai data collection policy (GDPR compliance). Please be sure to read the Acceptable Use Policy.

If it is impossible to use a wired connection, WiFi can be used instead but the console must be connected directly to the PC/Mac/Raspberry Pi with an Ethernet cable. The computer running XLink Kai can not be fully wireless and there must be a wired connection to the computer for the network interface going towards the xbox console.

Power on your xbox and make sure the link light comes on. If it doesn't check that your cables are firmly plugged in.If your xbox is connected directly to your computer and the link light does not come on you may need to use a crossover cable if your network interface is older and does not support Auto MDI-X

There are 139 games with the system-link feature for the original xbox. To see if the game you want to play is supported please check the supported games page or look for "System Link" on the back of the game case.

If you are having trouble finding other players to game with please join our Discord chat and use the various game-specific channels. There are also several fan-run discords that host regular game nights.

This varies on a user to user basis. For example, a user with their hardware already set up using methods one or two, and UPnP enabled in their router may be able to simply download the program and get going in under 5 minutes, whereas a user with a router that requires manual port forwarding, and who made need to source a USB Ethernet adapter for Kai may take a few hours to get set up, when troubleshooting time is factored in.

Check that the link light on your Xbox's ethernet port has come on. If it has not, try using a different ethernet cable and ensure that there are no issues with the ethernet port on both the Xbox and the PC.

This indicates that Kai cannot make a P2P connection to the user, and that either your port or the user's is closed. If both users have port forwarding set up correctly, try restart kaiengine. If that fails, restart your router. Ensure that you also do not have DMZ enabled on your router for any IP address. UPnP as a protocol can be rather unreliable so if this happens a lot for you, try switching to manual port forwarding.

If you have two or more routers on your network (you are double NATted), you should set one of them to bridge mode so only one router is performing NAT. If you only have one router, double check that port forwarding has been done correctly: the rule needs to be applied to the IP address of your computer running Kai, UDP selected as the protocol, and the port then manually set in Kai's configuration menu.

Get any other user in your arena to search for matches while you have the metrics tab open, then check if broadcast traffic inbound flashes a 1 or some other value. If it remains 0, double check there are no firewalls on your network that Kai has not been set as an exception in.If you can detect other users' consoles, read on.

Search for games, then ask users in the arena to check if they see your console under your profile. An alternative method of checking this is looking at outbound broadcast traffic under metrics while searching. Upon doing this, your console should be visible to all other users. If ethernet adapter shows "no traffic", navigate to the configuration menu and select your adapter manually. If you cannot see your adapter, refer to the issue below. If your consoles are visible to each other under your profiles, check if the game you are playing has any issues with region locks, ping limits, or update version incompatibilities (this info is usually pinned in the XLink arenas for the games).

If you are on Windows, there is a WinPcap bug which occurs if a network adapter's drivers are installed after WinPcap is installed. To resolve this, open an admin command prompt or powershell, and type in net stop npf followed by net start npf.

I ran the halo 2 game disc once made a profile, installed the dlc from a hdd ready download. Original hdd had the dlc already. The installed files match on the 1 TB drive so the install is good. 3 out of ten times when a dlc game is picked in the pregame lobby I get a "Failed to load map" error. Also when I try to join a game that is dlc it occurs as well. When I host a dlc game it works but not every time for the other person I get 1 or more players failed to load map. This occurs with xlink kai as a direct system link connection works every time. Not sure if it is xlink kai computer settings or what?

The DLC downloaded content could in fact be an installer, it would help if you could verify. Digiex.net offline dlc would be an option as I have two xbox's with failed dvd drives. I do still have the original hdd files. Would they work on an upgraded hdd? The original xbox has a aladdin modchip.

The XBX-Content program calls for a HDkey not a hddkey. I used method B and obtained the key from the txt file. The key was alpha numeric and was not valid. I looked at the eeprom.bin of the original drive and it was the same key but cap locked instead of lower case letters. I ended up using the DLC installer you gave in the link. What is the best procedure for installation. I deleted the existing map packs using microsoft dashboard but kept the user profile. The Halo version was still 1.1 from the previous update. I then used the DLC installer to install the maps. Does order matter?

feudalnate calls what I call the HDDKey - HDKey. They are one in the same. A 32-digit hexadecimal values used to generate the HDD's locking password or the key used to sign game saves and DLC content.

I think feudalnate and I both mean the value obtained from decrypting the configuration EEPROM's content stored from offset 0x1C to 0x2B. This value is used along with the hard drive's model and serial number to compute the unlocking password. It is also used to sign game saves that do so and signing DLC content.

I'm not sure what digiex's Halo 2 DLC Installer installs. Both the map pack and the game's title update or just the maps or a title update; therefore, best to make sure that all 4 folders exist on the hard drive.

XLink Kai is a free System-Link/LAN tunneling application for consoles that allows you to play with other users on the Internet as if you were on the same Local Area Network (LAN). Any System-Link/LAN enabled game on Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Playstation Portable, PS Vita, GameCube, Wii, Wii U or Nintendo Switch can be played online through the service.

Your XTag (similar to the Xbox Live Gamertag) is your username while using the XLink services and is your way of telling the world who you are. To get yourself registered, visit the XLink Kai signup page.

The XLink Kai online service is broken up into consoles, categories (such as "First Person Shooters" or "Racing"), and individual game arenas. You must be in the same game arena as another person for them to show up in your System-Link/LAN match list on your console. You can also create private passworded arenas to prevent random people from joining in by clicking the pencil icon in the Web UI.

When playing original Xbox titles on XLink Kai your PC and Xbox console must be wired to your network. You cannot use WiFi unless your xbox is connected directly to your PC. Read the guide for more info!

All Xbox 360 games have a 30 millisecond ping limit between the player and the host. A ping patch is available for JTAG and RGH modified systems, see the guide for how to enable it. Unmodified "stock" consoles can be the host of a match but if a client is over 30ms away then that client will need the ping patches installed. Original xbox titles played via backwards-compatibility are not subject to this ping limit when played on an Xbox 360.

When playing original Xbox 360 titles on XLink Kai your PC and Xbox 360 console must be wired to your network. You cannot use WiFi unless your Xbox 360 is connected directly to your PC and the Xbox 360 Wireless adapter is not supported for system-link play! Read the guide for more info!

The XLink Kai team does not have a guide available for Xbox One/Series X/S yet.The general process is to set manually set the IP address of the console using the XLink Kai IP Address Calculator based on the console's MAC address. When this special IP address is used the console will not be able to connect to Xbox Live, so be sure to revert back to your previous configuration to restore connectivity.
