I have an Ubuntu 14.04 server that has no external monitor connected. I use NoMachine to remote control the machine. When I do so, the Unity/Gnome interface doesn't see any monitors connected, so I can only use 800x600 when connecting with NoMachine. If I plug in a monitor, I can set the resolution to whatever size the NoMachine window is on the remote computer.
This is a hardware solution/workaround which may work for some graphics hardware/driver. Also could be better, if you need to plug physical monitor frequently, so you don't have to restart X Server like with dummy/vesa/fb driver (static configuration).
John Chapman's answer didn't work for me. I can suggest this link for a fixed dummy display with 1024x768 24bit. I can successfully connect to my pc without any display attached. My system is Ubuntu 16.04. You should install VESA video driver.
Hi, I've got a recent issue with Power BI desktop. It opens on my laptop screen and when I move to my second much larger screen it's limited to the original laptop screen dimensions. It will not go full screen.
This happened to me just now... took me a while to figure it out. On the larger monitor, when I clicked on "Maximize" window button the top right hand side, nothing would happen and the desktop app retained the same dimension/space as it was on the laptop.
What I did was, using the Power BI Desktop window corners, reduce the size down very small, then hit the maximize window button on the top right of the window. This forced it to fill the full size of the monitor.
I have been experiencing this issue as well--so annoying! However, @Gerard_Plante mentions in his post worked for me! Use the arrows in the corner of the app window to minimize it to as small as it goes. Then hit the maximize window button.
For anyone else investigating the problem I've found it varies between PBIX files, older files seem to be more likely to suffer the issue but brand new files don't. Maybe it's a backward compatibility issue?
Hi, thanks for checking. I also have the very latest version of the Desktop App. The laptop screen is running at 1920x1080 and the monitor is running at 2560x1440 because it's much larger. I've tried switching between display port and HDMI connectors for the monitor with no effect.
My test was working on the two screen with both 1920*1080, it works well. So I suspect it may casued by different display resolution. Unfortunately, I don't have device with 2560x1440 for test, would you please try to change the second screen's display resolution to 1920*1080 and try again.
Hi, I changed the monitor to 1920x1080 to match the laptop and the issue still persisted. I've been using PBI Desktop for a long time with this monitor and this issue is only a recent development, but has happened across two versions of the desktop app.
This happens to me sometimes when I undock my laptop. You can click on the app on the taskbar and then hold down the windows key and then move the app using the left or right arrow keys. It might take several taps to move it all the way over.
Some programs explicitly store their window location and size on exit. When they reopen they tell Windows to put them exactly where they were before. The methods above should be enough for you to get the window to be visible once more.
When you hover over the icon of the application right click and say maximise. When you close it down again and reopen it will remember its settings. I used to get this all the time when I had people going from work to home. At work they would have 2 monitors and open the app on the 2nd monitor. At home they would only have a single screen. I had to talk people through this several times during lockdown
One option that has not yet been mentioned is to click on the app on the task bar to make it the active window, then hold down the windows key and then press the left arrow(or if you believe the app to be off the left side of the screen, use the right arrow) which after two or three presses should move the window onto your active monitor. The first press should shift the app to half screen. The next press should then move it to the next screen if it exists. If by the fourth press of the arrow key you do not see your app, then it may be off the opposite direction. Same goes for up and down. I hope this will help as well.
I attach it to my modern Surface Laptop 5 whose resolution is 2256 x 1504. In the System Settings -> Display window, when I select the "Extend these displays" option, I see fullscreen windows on both laptop and monitor displays but when I select the "Duplicate these displays" option, I see a small black left-out area on left and right sides, on the attached monitor. I assume this is due to the fact that the maximum supported resolution for the external monitor is lower than the laptop's so the monitor can fill only 1920 x 1200 pixels on the screen, but then how can it fill the entire screen when in extended display mode? What is this phenomenon called? See the picture, the red arrows point to the black areas.
It is not quite 100% clear what you are asking about, but I guess the best answer would be "basic geometry". In television and movies, it is called pillarboxing, but according to my observations, this term is not well-known in IT. A more well-known term is letterboxing which refers to the dual: adding blank space at the top and bottom in order to display wide content on a narrow screen.
All this assumes only scaling. If you are willing to stretch or squeeze the content, then it can fill both screens, but it would look "wrong" on at least one of them. In particular, a circle would turn into an oval on at least one of the two screens.
After a Firmware Upgrade this week, it stopped working.
The USB-C Port can charge. The Monitor works directly with an HDMI cable.
But connecting the monitor with HDMI to a USBC stopped working,
I had exactly the same issue with my HP EliteBook 855 G7 AMD chipset. Today morning my BIOS was updated, and my second monitor is not recognized. I am using a USB-c adapter with Display ports to connect my second monitor, but unfortunately, after the updates, nothing is working. Next, I tried to download drivers for the chipset directly from AMD without success. Finally, I installed all the drivers for the model from HP support site - nothing is working.
Can someone help with this issue?

I had a similar issue, black display macbook pro. Worked when connected to external monitor. Did all the resets like P+R power on to reset displays did not work. Finally disconnected video cable and put it back in and it worked. Thank You for this tip!
disconnected the power cable from the MBP - does this mean the power charging cable? Or the cable the arrow points to in the photo? I am assuming you have to remove the charging cable too... but I just want to make sure. I don't have extra couple hundred dollars for apple diagnosis. so I would like to try your method first. ?
Yeah I did the same thing on a friend's 13" MacBook Pro, the screen was black on startup with apple logo on back glowing. I opened it up and unplugged that little screen plug, and plugged it back and voila! All systems GO. Thanks for that tip!
Unfortunately I think I've exhausted all the quick, easy, cheap fixes. I think I just have to have the screen replaced. My problem is that this computer is my work computer and I need it 10+ hours a day, most days, and by the time I'm done or on weekends, the computer repair places are closed. And I'm the only person in my office that does what I do, so its not like I can let somebody else pick up the slack for a few days. So I'm kind of stuck until my boss upgrades our laptops or I take a vacation.
This was helpful, but before I opened up the back, I just pressed on the area on the back where the video cable is and I heared a click... and it worked after that! I had just gotten home from traveling and think all of the jostling must have disconnected the video cable. Thanks for the tip!
Did you ever find a resolution to your problem? This just happened to me and I am looking for a solution since my laptop "symptoms" match yours almost exactly. One thing to add, my keboard lights will work at times but sometimes they won't. Strange.
Whala !....The MBP display was working again. So it turned out the power cable from the Systemboard to the Display was not making a good connection. Simply disconnecting and reconnecting the cable fixed the problem.
