Hi guys,
i just returned from holiday in Bulgaria, where i have planned to find some gaidars to help me out mith my reeds. Unfortunately, in Pomorie, where i have been, there was none. I was there with my small kids so i haven´t had a chance to travel to Bata village where nearest gaidars were.
So, i need to purchase new gaidunitsa reeds, as both reeds i have refuse to perform as intended and no one is able to help me resolve the issue.
My instrument was bought at Shopbulgaria.com, only other place i know of is Bulgariana.com.
I know is best to buy reeds directly from instrument maker, but Shopbulgaria reeds don´t work right out-of-the-box for me so i want to try other sources.
Can you recommend me some good Djura Gaida reed makers ? I believe there may be some of them amongst you guys here...

Thanks in advance.

There is a good bagpipe maker in Sofia.
How long do you stay in Bulgaria, do you intend to travel to Sofia. If so I can check if the maker is available.

Greetings
Kostadin

If you are close to Straldzha there are two masters there I know. Zhechko and Kolio. I don't think they speak english. Do you want their mobile numbers?

Hi guys,
i am already back home from Bulgary, you have missed this part of my post :-)
I would be glad if you gave me contact to that makers you know, but e-mail should be better than mobile number, considering none of us speaks other´s language. In e-mail i can use help of Google Translate so i can write to them in Bulgarian.

The master that makes Kaba reeds for this site, wouldn´t he be able to make djura reeds ? Are they that different ? Or is it a matter of having actual Djura gaida to be able to tweak and fine-tune it ? None of you Kaba players use Djura aswell ?

Thanks guys.

Hi,
in order to solve the problem from the root it's best to ship your instrument with return postage paid. Djura and kaba reeds are different by design. Some masters fabricate both djura and kaba pipes. There was a guy called Emilian who plays both and plays together with the kaba gaida team.

Hi,
so i understand it now, i have thought Djura is just a small Kaba, at least when it comes to reeds.
Would you guys check these Djura masters please, if i can have their email ? I really don´t want to buy another reed from
my original place (Shopbulgaria) as none of reeds i got there work well and they don´t bother responding my question about possibility of replacement.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think they have emails :) Maybe some of the younger ones, but I don't know any.

Ah, i see. So apart from learning to speak Bulgarian, i have no other way to get working reed for my instrument, it seems.
Please give me some options, guys, it starts to drive me crazy :-(

Thanks in advance.

Hi Gaidarn00b,

I know a Djura Gaida maker in Sofia who speaks relatively good English. I can put you in contact with him if you like, and you can talk about getting a new reed. I don't know his email (I can ask him though), but he definitely has a facebook account, if you want to speak to him there.

So Gaidanoobie,
when you ask for the reeds, it's best to ship the pipe as well for adjustment and check. Only changing the reeds without a thorough check is a lengthier process. Other things could lurk as well. This is my opinion and you don't have to follow it straight away.

D

I definitely appreciate your advice, Div. Once i´ll get in contact with the master (hopefully Jonathan will get me one) i´ll keep it in mind and will send him the chanter for thorough check. In fact, i start to suspect there may be problem with chanter itself aswell, even if my plastic PC reeds doesn´t share the issue with original reeds.

Thank you very much guys.

We have a project for teaching basic English for gaida makers and players. Maybe we can include and Djura makers.

Thank you very much for the contact, Jonathan !
However, e-mail address doesn´t show properly, all i can see is gajd...@gmail.com     I believe there´s some letters missing in place of dots, wander if it´s forum masking this... would you please write it again ?
E-mail is much more convenient for me than FB, hope i don´t bother you much.
Thanks again !

Hi guys,

i just wanted to let you know i have my issue sorted out. I wrote to Martin (gajdar4o), he wanted to see a picture of my chanter to know the maker, and after i sent a pic to him, he commented it looks like a souvenir. That, along with rather expensive shipping (to send chanter to Martin, so he can send it to its maker, and back) convinced me to rather buy a new chanter (with reed, of course). I´ve received it today and i am happy with it, works right out-of-the-box. It was a bit more expensive that i what i hoped for, but Martin was so kind to include another chanter in "D" with it so its a win-win for me.
Not only i got two good quality chanters in two different tunings which gives me more possibilities, it was also solved very fast. And i keep my original chanter with plastic PC reed in it for quiet practicing at home, so rally i am more than happy with how it all worked out in the end.
All this wouldn´t happen without your help guys, thank you all. Particularly i want to thank Jonathan for providing me Martin´s contact, now i can solve any issue that may arise directly with him.
So thanks to everyone here on this forum who are helping out clueless newbies like me :-)
Cheers

morale of the story is - do some research before buying or be prepared to pay more
Glad it's working for you.
