Dear all,

I am currently transcribing a svornato from a recording by Stefan Zahmanov (Balkanton BHA 10162). As far as I can hear, he plays a kaba gajda in E - and I've got the impression he has not only an E drone, but also a B drone playing. Would that be possible? Or do I hear overtones?

The finished sheet music will be on www.folkloretanznoten.de, as Svornato 5. Please feel free to link to whatever you like, but do not copy the PDFs onto your site, as everything I might add or correct later would then be missed. That website is a neverending work in progess.

Best

Hello Jutta,

there is no second drone. Maybe you get this impression because the drone is very susceptible to the air preasure in the bag of the bagpipe. In cases when the player doesn't blow air evenly and rythmycally into the bag  the drone's tone may fluctuate a bit up and down.

Thank you for sharing your work with us and I am very glad that you take interest into the kaba-bagpipe!

Best regards,
Kostadin

Thank you, Kostadin, that's a good explanation.

The sheet music is online now: http://www.folkloretanznoten.de/Svornato5.pdf

There are quite a lot of Rodope pieces in the Bulgarian section (http://www.folkloretanznoten.de/bulgarian.html), but we don't often get solo gajda recordings. Maybe you'll find some PDFs which you like.

Yep, the drone is in E and goes a little bit higher from time to time.

Jutta,  which city are you from? Do you know kaba gaida players there?

I live in Darmstadt, and I don't know any kaba gajda players here. Maybe I'll learn it myself...

I know Mick, who lives near Hannover. If you visit it I can give you a contact.

Hi guys,

This is a great website with lots of references for a newbie like myself.

A BIG БЛАГОДАРЯ!

I am just starting to learn the kaba-gajda and currently live in Vienna.
Do you know some players in Austria or around Vienna?

Поздрави,
Коста

Hi Kosta!

Check out here http://www.kabagaida.com/map. Seems that Markus from Graz is the nearest kabagaida player. I'll ask him if I can share his contacts with you. If you don't mind I'm adding you to the map so kaba gaida fans can ask for your contacts.

Have a good evening!

the trick is leaving the lowest hole - which plays in low B open. when you close all the holes for a second you get an extra B which you consider a second drone. Typical for the kaba style of playing

@ Cvetelin,

Thanks for a quick response.
Please, add me to the map, sounds like a great idea.
Unfortunately, as I mentioned I am just starting, so I will not be much of a useful reference to anyone ...
but would gladly pair up with other enthusiasts :)

Greets,
Kosta
