Hello!

I have a Bulgarian gajda (not Kaba, but I have not found a message board for it.) I received it about 5 months ago and have maybe 10 lessons so far from someone who studied it in Bulgaria.

I am a folk dancer (I live in Austin, TX) and I play clarinet and penny whistle in a small band that often performs for dancers. Learning the gajda has been the hardest thing I have tried to learn as an adult! But I get better every week, and sometimes I think my gajda and I are becoming friends.

My main goal is to play for dancers. (Even hearing the warm-up notes in my head gives me shivers. To me it is one of the best sounds in the world. Many of my friends think so too.) I will be able to join a band in 4 weeks to play for dancers. The melody is simple and I have known it for years. But performing with others is going to be difficult because I cannot hear them! (Not even the loud accordion.) I am also worried about getting in tune with them and staying that way.

Advice?

 Thanks,
Leslie

short one: play, play and play
Long one: gather together with the band. take out the notes on a note sheet and play together. watch each other. especially those of you who are wood wind. develop a code to signal each other. then play alone. first slowly then medium. remember that the purpose is not to chew the sounds, but articulate them as in front of your government and etc.
