Qawwalimusic is the devotional music of the Sufis, usually sung in Urdu, Punjabi or Persian. The lyrics are in praise of God (Allah), his Prophet (Mohammed), his friend (Ali) and other Muslim Saints.

Lyrics by 17th century saint and Sufi poet in traditional Punjabi. Sung in praise of the jogi, or devotee, it also tells the story of the legendary lovers Heer and Ranjah. Their tragic affair ended with Ranjah giving up the world to become a jogi.

The Khan family have been developing the art of Qawwali for over six centuries. Nusrat himself, however, had no intention of becoming a Qawwal. He only decided to sing after a recurring dream convinced him this was the path to follow.

A devotional song is a hymn that accompanies religious observances and rituals. Traditionally devotional music has been a part of Hindu music, Jewish music, Buddhist music, Islamic music and Christian music.

Each major religion has its own tradition with devotional hymns. In Christianity, the devotional has been a part of the liturgy in Roman Catholicism, Lutheranism, the Greek Orthodox Church, the Russian Orthodox Church, and others, since their earliest days. A devotional is a part of the prayer service proper and is not, in these contexts, ornamentation. Within the Reformed tradition, church music in general was hotly debated; some Puritans objected to all ornament and sought to abolish choirs, hymns, and, inasmuch as liturgy itself was rejected, devotionals.

In Eastern and Near-Eastern religions, devotionals can function as communion prayer and meditation. These are sung in particular rhythms which are sustained over a prolonged period to give practitioners a mystical experience. In Hindu music, the genre arising out of the Bhakti movement (devotion), it takes forms like Bhajan, Kirtan and Aarti.[1][2]

This session forms part of a ten-programme cycle entitled Illuminated Hours. The devotional cinema of Nathaniel Dorsky and Jerome Hiler, organised in collaboration with the Filmoteca de Catalunya and Zumzeig Cinema, including a large part of their respective filmographies. The screenings are accompanied by an installation by Nathaniel Dorsky and the publication of a book on the early days of cinema and shared life of these two filmmakers.

The USP of the group has been the presentation of a medley of devotionals. Formed in Kottayam district in Kerala in 2000, the group has a presence in Dubai since 2014, after some of its members moved to West Asia when they got jobs. Naveen Mohan, one of the senior members in the current line-up, was instrumental in forming the group in Dubai.

This article provides empirical data from transnational religious contexts which highlight thecomplexity, fluidity and indexicality of language and religious practices in globalising settings.Through an examination of the role of devotional song and poetry in the Islamic world, and inparticular, among young multilingual and multivarietal British Muslims, an attempt is made toshow how globalising processes of the present age contribute to, on the one hand, novel formsof language resources and innovative religious practices and, on the other, co-existingtraditional approaches to faith and language practices. It also shows how young people deploytheir linguistic repertoires and language resources in order to re-construct their religious andlinguistic identities. A conclusion is presented that such practices, whilst drawing on old andtraditional roots, become transformed when enacted in these newer settings, bothlinguistically and religiously.
