Fellows,

Greetings,

The other day I chanced upon Momo to whom I posed the question :
"what does the motto 'Honor Deo et Patriae' mean?

Throughout my sleepwalk at KA I assumed I knew what it meant. Now I am not
sure. In my discussions with Momo we seemed unable to arrive at what might
be the meaning.

Is it Honour to God and Country?

Is it Honour to God and Father?

Is it Honour to God and Founder?

Is it Honour to our God and Country, or to our God and Father, or to our
God and Founder?

the Founder preference preoccupied my mind back in the day, but 'Deo et
Patriae' on its own seems to mean 'of God and Country'.

Will somebody assist in the liberation of a mind that is uncertain, nay,
outright uninformed, and inexcusably so ( you will argue)

I think there are many meanings of "patriae" or we can assign many meanings.
One will say that it means "father" another "founder" and I want to believe
that in our K.A context it means "Patron" which ably fits what we sang in
the school hymn.

Of course the word stems from pater which is the latin for father, and
yes there are many meanings.

In our context it means fatherland. So it stands for 'honour to our God
and fatherland' or country

Religiously, God is honoured first then country, then man.

Alinane,
I once asked our Latin teacher and he said that the real meaning is
'Honour to God and your fatherland'.

Hi good people!!

I remember coming across the above exclamation(EUREKA!! EUREKA!! EUREKA!!!!!)in my study of ancient history under the Kachere Tree long long time ago. However,my memory has betrayed me since I can't remember the context from which this exclamation arose. Can somebody please remind me; who said these words and why he said so? What did he discover?

I need the info urgently, so please help!

Enjoy the day!!

Stanley,

Read below:

Eureka (Greek "I have found it") is an exclamation used as an interjection to celebrate a discovery. It is most famously attributed to Archimedes; he reportedly uttered the word when, while bathing, he suddenly understood that the volume of an irregular object could be calculated by finding the volume of water displaced when the object was submerged in water. After making this discovery, he is said to have leapt out of his bathtub and run through the streets of Syracuse naked.

Archimedes is the one who said it, he reportedly uttered the word when,

while bathing, he suddenly understood that the volume of an irregular
object could be calculated by finding the volume of water displaced when
the object was submerged in water. After making this discovery, he is
said to have leapt out of his bathtub and run through the streets of
Syracuse naked. Archimedes' insight led to the solution of a problem
that had been asked of him by Hiero of Syracuse, on how to assess the
purity of an irregular golden crown: by dividing the object's weight by
its volume, one could calculate its density, an important indicator of
purity.
