Mach and I (Ben) were the only attendees. At the meeting we brainstormed ideas for the group. We have setup this website and came up with a few draft ideas for the aims, objectives and philosophies of the group. We have decided to wait for a larger assembly of KLUG to vote and finalise any ideas.

Draft aims:

  • Educate people about Linux and open source software across Kildare
  • To enable Linux (and Unix users) from across Kildare to communicate with each other.

Miscellaneous ideas

  • Low membership fee (something around the €2 mark) to cover the domain and other investment.
  • Ubuntu/KLUG launch party (around April).
Hopefully we can arrange a larger meeting where we can agree on a full set of ideals/aims/objectives for the club.

Thanks,
Ben Chapman

On this...

I'm not a developer or programmer, I'm a journalist. I've also been a
linux user for about 4 years at this stage. Put together a pitch for a
weekly newspaper article on open source software, consisting of a single
product review each week, with a recession angle (why pay X when Y is
free) and you can probably get one of the local papers to carry it.
Alternatively, it makes a weekly short interview piece on local radio.

One thing, don't oversell linux at first. Talk open source, but first
get into the specific program, point out its available for Win/Mac too,
and then segue into "and btw there's an entirely free OS".

Or you could FOI the Co Council and other public bodies, and ask how
much they spend on computer software. They'll probably moan about
commercial sensitivity, but you might get some stats you can use to
argue for more FOSS in publi life/schools.

Sounds good, we had our own ideas for this too. Might be worth arranging another meeting for some time next month (getting an idea of when most people are available) and chatting about it?

Sorry we could not make it.
We will hopefully make the next meeting or one of us at least will.
It is probably not a bad idea to revive the irc channel either, there is normally only 2 of us logged in there.
