I use Ubuntu, so I'm more familiar with Gnome, or was until Shuttleworth
decided on the abomination that is Unity. At the moment I'm in the
market for a new distro, and I quite like the look of Xfce. I've also
looked at Fedora/SuSE (both Gnome, I think) in recent weeks, but for
some reason neither of them wants to connect to my wireless modem, which
makes them pretty useless until I can find out what's going on.

Anyway, I think that makes me a vote for Gnome, with the proviso hat I
haven't seen Gnome 3 yet, and last saw a KDE desktop about five years
ago.

Yes to the first two, though I prefer Evolution for mail. Thunderbird
feels too "html/webby", and Evolution reminds me of Eudora, which I used
for years.

Also regularly used for work:
Scribus
Gimp
Digikam
gedit
Inkscape
gFTP
Skype (ok, not quite FOSS)
Audacity

And finally, for The Pretty:
Compiz
Cairo Dock

Final note: I'm a user, not a developer. I just want something that Just
Works.

Final Final Note: It make be heresy in the County of Brigid, but could I
suggest a name: Colmcille. How many other saints can you think of who
went to war for the right to freely make copies?

With so many distro's already out there what would be the advantage of creating out own?

Just so my post isn't misunderstood, I'm quite happy to go with Xfce,
there's a lo to be said for spartan windows that don't hog memory
