[tech-geeks] Google Apps - how to get free premier edition (for more than 50 users)

I know many on the list have commented about getting Google Apps for free, including the premier edition. When I was setting up an account I cannot figure out how to get Premier for free. I have a standard account and am going to sign up for the trial of Premier but don't see a way to get it without it being a trial. Any suggestions?

Actually, I can't even do the trial without a credit card. To add 2000 users, it is going to cost $100,000! Suddenly MS licensing doesn't look so bad!!

Not sure what the confusion is, but start here and lets get this set right - you should /not/ need any credit card numbers...

Sounds like you enrolled through
http://google.com/a
instead of starting at
http://google.com/a/edu
There is a way to ask to redo the starndard acct as an education
account. The first one I did I made that mistake and had to send in a
request form asking to be changed to an education account.
See if you can request the upgrade here:

Did that - got a 50 user K12 account. Not sure how to verify that the account is actually K12 though.

If i recall - you should have given them some starter info and then they will verify themselves based on the info you did provide - were you ever asked for anything that might have started that process??

I answered some questions in the sign up and had to indicate K12 and Primary/Secondary institution type. I then got to the verification page and had a choice to verify using HTML code (which is the option I selected) or with a CNAME record. The confirmation e-mail I received included the following statement:
-------------
Before you can access Google Apps' advanced features like mail migration, phone support and APIs, you'll need to verify ownership of
student.manteno5.org. Once you have completed the process, we will review your organization's status as an educational institution or qualified non-profit. In the meantime, we have signed you up for Google Apps Standard Edition.
-------------
Maybe that means they are still verifying?

Tom,
The Apps Team should send an e-mail to the address you listed on the
Admin Contact during the signup (an existing none google apps account)
It will ask a couple questions to verify you are a school. Address,
phone, website, etc.
Once established you will have a link to Request More Accounts. When I
have done this I ask for 500 accounts and within a day I have the new
account capacity. I am not big enough to ask for 2000 accounts, but Abe
and Curtis have over 5000 accounts.

I have not received an e-mail yet to confirm our educational status but perhaps those folks don't work on weekends. :-)

Exactly - you are waiting for them to verify - and not on weekend.
You should be set to go from here.

This is the original validation that you own/manage the domain. There
is a follow-up validation that I have always done as an e-mail exchange
answering their 4 or 5 questions.

Thanks Mike!
This is actually my second attempt - I tried last fall but had some issues with my sub-domain and am just now getting back to it. At least I got further this time than last! :-)

Sometimes they're slow. Even after returning the email, it took over a
month for us to be verified and activated. Others have been activated
in just a couple days.

I've done 2 schools with this now. Both took over a week for the educational verification. Last one took close to 2. As far as us and our 6500 allocated accounts, I'm pretty sure the "request more users" link is an automatic process. Whenever I've clicked it I have my requested number seems almost instantly after I click submit.

Don't hold your breath too long. I sent that information on April 28th and it's still not been changed.
It also took them over two weeks for their sales team to contact me following my first request for information, and the guy took down my information and got an idea what I wanted. I was told I'd be contacted again with the pricing, etc., and now it's been another week with nothing.
I don't know if it depends upon school size or it's random draw of which Google employee ends up with your responses or what.

My guess is they are getting hammered by school account requests now and they probably don't have many resources assigned to managing free accounts. It took me a couple weeks to get converted from a Standard to Education account (I did it wrong too), but that was also over a year ago.

If google really is valuing this at $50/user then I can see why they
would not have a significant staff assinged to setting up "free"
accounts figuring they would "lose" $100,000 on our account alone.

Our first account for staff last year took less than a week. Our second one this winter, took about 3 weeks and I have heard on twitter it taking a month. It might take some patience this time.

Hmm,
Can I sign up for this but not use the email? Or is everything tied into
the gmail account? If its free I would like to sign up before the deadline
even though our district has no immediate plans to move this direction.

You can have it setup and not use email.
I'm thinking about doing that at a school I volunteer for. That way the students could have school managed doc accounts but not email headaches.

It would be clunky - but how is email fundamentally different from creating a document and sharing it with another student?

Internal, yes, this could dawn on brighter students, but receiving/sending to the outside world wouldn't be much of an option unless they created a document and shared it for each person they wanted to communicate with. External initiated communication couldn't really happen.

I guess another question worth asking is it going to remain free forever?
While I do use google apps for my email, getting that email back out if they
do decide to start charging from what I have seen isn't exactly easy.

Which is why we need some team(s) in the state of Illinois to write
code for an "Illinois Cloud Apps for Education" which is less clunky
and has more features than Google Apps for education -- like being
fully integrated with Moodle and an SIS . . .
Surely we have professors at one of our state schools who could
supervise students to come up with something . . . or some company
whose enterprise engineers could be tasked to do something so noble as
write the code for "Illinois Cloud Apps for Education," right?

I suspect it will stay "free" but with more strings - perhaps very specifically targeted ads using some of the personal information you provided or additional compilation of marketing data using your information. As I have said in the past, the revenue generated by google's standard in-line advertising is minimal compared to what they can make selling marketing data!
