Hi, Everyone:

Does anyone have a "Dirty Words" list they are using for their Apps EDU domain to use to filter e-mail off of?

Also, I am working with a group of IT people on Monday on Migrating to Google Apps and there is a lot of interest in migrating from Exchange to Google Apps.  I know there is the migration tool and documentation on Google's internal sites, but I was wondering if anyone had a process or hints to look out for when doing this.

I am thinking there may have been some recent posts on this, so I will go back and look.

Thanks in advance.

Sure, here is a link to our bad word list:

There are a little over 100 in the list.  We used to have a much bigger list, but got too many false positives, so we trimmed it down to just the clearly inappropriate words.

I used George Carlin's stand up routine as my guide.

p.s. - As for the Exchange to Gmail migration:
On a related note, one thing that helped us after the transition was to make sure the default email application on all the computers was switched from Outlook to Gmail.  If not, then anytime someone clicks on an email link on a website, Outlook will still launch, and then give them errors about not being able to access the server.

To make this switch we used our login script to push out a small program called Gmail Notifier.  It is designed to give people a desktop reminder anytime they get new email, but the real benefit of it is that it sets Gmail as the default email program for the computer.

You can see our FAQ for our staff about it here:

Might have some dups from Eric's list and this is what we used  https://docs.google.com/a/d214.org/document/edit?id=1zQa_UDR3e0NRIS1glbOSUzCRp_LxKRBrcEkqmEDmUwo&hl=en . It works great and the emails that are captured go to a flagged account at each of our buildings for the Deans to review each day.

Hi, Everyone:

Your help on this issue has been awesome.  Eric, the page that you linked to has a nice video tutorial that we can link to for districts getting ready to make the transition over the Google Apps.  I know my district will be using this when we transition our staff over to GMail this summer.

Thanks to everyone again, this has been a huge help.

What section in the settings would these Regex be applied? Objectionable content or Content compliance?

If you are just trying to block the literal words, you would simply add them to the "Objectionable content" section.  If you are trying to block them with some regular expressions to catch variations and such, then you would have to add them to "Content compliance".  We just use the "Objectionable content" section for the bad word list.  I find there is a danger of false positives if you try to catch variations, plus kids will always find a different way to spell a profanity if they really want to.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but what about drugs?
Do you set any filters/key words for things such as Vicodin ect.

We don't, never really thought about it. I would think many of those words would create false positives. Even in our "swear" word filters some are used properly for school work and get caught. If it's a big worry you can always send it but BCC an email address.

In light of the recent school shootings in nearby Chardon, Ohio, we may add in a list of "concern" words (like maybe "bomb", "kill", and such).  However, we would not block emails with these (far too many false positives), but would simply send a BCC to a catch-all account that the building principals or guidance counselors could check.

I have this in content compliance filters:
enlargement[*!@#$&]pills
and
v[i!1][a@]gr[a@]

I should do the other major enhancement drug as well.
Its actually set up to reject the message if it meets the filter.
