Good afternoon all,

Google just announced yesterday that those people with school email accounts through Gmail will not be able to share documents outside of their domain name.

Does anyone have any more information on this?  What do others plan to do if this is true?

What?  Could you kindly provide some sort of link or documentation detailing this supposed announcement?  That literally does not make sense, although such rules can be enforced by a GAFE administrator.

Thats what I said.  I do not have a link, as it came from an email from a near by districts tech team asking me about what to do now.  I am just as confused, can I consider this a myth then?
As I personally can not find anything myself.  I am waiting to see how they heard about it also.

I don't see any mention of it on the Apps Blog: http://whatsnew.googleapps.com/update-feed.

I know that is a setting that domains admins can set per-domain.   So it is likely that the announcement was for your school domain only.   Also if you are using the new interface and share dialogue, the setting to share outside the domain is hidden and not intuitive that it even exists.

So here is the document that the school had showing the change.  I am very confused now.  So its not that you can no longer share outside the domain, it looks like you can only pick one sharing setting for the entire domain?  Those that have 2 domains would not be affected, and those that have one domain for teachers and students would have to choose the same method for all?   Anyone have a better take on this?

Google has said that you can't have more than 1 sharing setting on your domain.  We can't have students with the capability ONLY to share internally while admin/teachers can share outside of the domain.  Everyone has to have the same setting.

If the students do not have outside email, would that not keep them from sharing?

Found the actual support link you are referring to: https://support.google.com/a/answer/182081?hl=en

What it is saying:    There are 2 ways to set up your school GAFE domain.  The method that most use is a single-domain for all your users.  This option includes the ability to share to everyone in the domain, and if the admin chooses also to share outside the domain.    The second method (less common), is to associate 2 or more domains with one GAFE setup.   Admins can manage which users belong to which domain from one Admin Dashboard.    However in this setup there is no way to distinguish just the second domain from the first, so the option to share to the entire domain is not availible, (or it will include all domains managed by that GAFE dashboard).
