Okay, I am asking this on behalf of my ed tech director who doesn't
know all the network services side of things.

In our district he wld like toassign kids usernames that reflect the
building they are in like this:
user...@school.district.edu

I don't believe this is possible, but I thought I'd double check.

Thanks!

Completely doable.  You create the sub domain in your apps dashboard.  It will ask if you to verify it.  Once verified, you can create accounts using the new sub domain.  Or, switch existing accounts to the new sub domain.

Hi Steve,

So, with contact sharing, can you turn it off for the sub domain but leave it on for the master domain? Thanks, -Joe

Greetings!
My understanding of the Google Apps setup is that creating sub-domains varies based on how you wish to use them.

You'll need to create multiple Google Apps accounts if you want to have a user's primary email address be us...@something.district.org/edu. Unfortunately, this scenario leads to multiple issues of not having everyone within the same domain (as Google defines the term domain).

Within a single Google Apps account, you can have multiple subdomains. For the most part, they would exist as C-Name and MX records. There is no mechanism (that I know of) to force a user's email address to use the us...@something.district.org/edu. They would all log in as us...@district.org/edu. They would be able to receive and send mail from all subdomains, with properly registered MX records, associated with the Google apps account.

The only reason I am aware of this is because our ideal situation was to have us...@student.domain.org and us...@faculty.domain.org. That being said, if anyone has a work around on how to create a true hierarchy within the realm of Google Apps for Edu, please feel free to share!

As far as I know, contact sharing is an all or nothing type setting.  If you enable it you have a few setting options as far as nicknames, but that's it.  Depending on how you create the accounts, you have the option of not sharing users contact information with the domain.

We have a single Google Apps domain with our staff having accounts within the root domain (ie. user...@domain.org).  Our students are in their own sub domain, their naming convention is ID12...@students.domain.org.  We are using a SSO solution for handling user authentication.  But if you use the standard URLs to log in, staff would use mail.google.com/a/domain.org and students would use mail.google.com/a/students.domain.org.

The main issue with multiple Google Apps domains is if a student moves from one domain to another (ie, Elementary ABC to XYZ Middle School) they would have to have a new account and lose all previous work.  Or it would be time consuming to transfer it.

Don't know if that helps any

If you setup sub domains withing a single Google organization, can you direct one subdomain to a different mail server? i.e. if I wanted @domain.org to continue using our existing Exchange server for faculty/staff and @highschool.domain.org to use Google mail for our students...

Thanks for any insight,
Roy

Hello Roy,

Yes you can, you would not activate the email service for @domain.org.

Thanks!

Roy, that's exactly what we're setting up right now, and it works as
expected. @domain.edu email addresses are staff, still on Exchange.
@students.domain.edu email addresses are student emails, using Gmail
through Google Apps for Education. The staff also have Google Apps
accounts, using accounts with the same name as their pre-existing
email addresses. All of the Google Apps accounts for students and
staff are managed through one Google Apps for Education account.

In case you're looking at how to set this up: you'll need to verify
the @highschool.domain.org subdomain in the domain settings area in
Google Apps. To make the email actually work, you'll also need to add
a new MX record to your DNS records, and that MX record should specify
the @highschool.domain.org subdomain (so that it won't affect your
existing Exchange email setup.)
