I do something similar. I create an assignment sheet from the start that includes the assignment, room to compose, the rubric, the correction numbers (departmental requirement), and
room for revisions. I share this to students with "view-only" rights by dragging/dropping it in a folder that is itself shared with them with "view-only" rights. At the top of the doc, I give instructions for them to make a copy, rename with our
special file-naming protocol, and then share the copy with me. As I grade, I simply highlight their placement on the rubric that is already directly in the doc. I add comments as well. Sometimes, I screencast feedback for the student, upload it from Jing
to Screencast.com, and then drop the link to the screencast back into the doc itself. After the students get feedback, they place their revisions directly in the doc as well.
Here is a copy of an example (this lovely student agreed to allow me to make a copy of her work to share with you, minus her name, of course).
It's everything in one place, and I see their work from the beginning and all the way through to revisions. I enter grades in our SIS gradebook separately.
