Google Docs editing question:

Is there an add-on or input command so that language arts teachers can insert editing symbols
when correcting students' compositions?  I'm looking for a way for language arts teachers
to be able to use editing symbols and mark students' compositions RIGHT NEXT TO THE SENTENCES
WITHIN THE DOCUMENT.

I have teachers who do NOT want to just leave comments.
They want to be able to mark next to the mistakes with the commonly accepted editing symbols

See attached image for sample marks.

1) Can it be done on computers, laptops, etc.?

2) Can it be done on a tablet that uses a stylus?

Thank you,
Carol LaRow

I had a teacher who took a different approach to this task. Rather than making the corrections *for* us, he put brackets around any text that needed attention--whether a single word, a phrase or sentence--then *we* had to figure out what correction needed to be made.  I'm convinced my writing improved more than if had he simply marked up my papers like a copy editor.

Tom,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I understand it made you think more, and you
had to "discover" the mistake yourself.

I have some teachers who really want to know if they can do this.

I'm also wondering if a stylus on a writeable tablet screen would capture the marks.

Hi, Carol!

We encountered this exact question earlier this fall, as we introduced Google Drive to our ELA and Social Science teachers.  To help them provide a variety of feedback we developed This Presentation.  Checkout the presentation beginning with slide 4 for some ideas.

Enjoy the rest of the day!

I am not sure if this directly addresses your issue, but our Humanities teachers have found using Replace > With to be quite effective and efficient.  Go to Tools > Preferences and then put in the symbol, abbreviation, etc. that you would want to be inserted.  Then, whenever your teacher types the full command the symbol, abbreviation, etc. will be substituted.

I have to ask though: Why does your teacher need to use those editing marks? Those marks were created largely because direct edits could not be made on paper. I would venture to guess that while they have been commonly-accepted, they will not be for much longer, or certainly not for digital composition anyway.

It is a little like learning to develop film, splice tape or film, or write with a fountain pen. It isn't that it has no point, but we have to be careful about how we handle the spectrum from useful, historical methods with pedagogical reasoning to obsolete methods, even if an overwhelming sense of nostalgia helps them retain value.

Then again, maybe editing marks will be co opted by the hipsters, too, and all those students will one day be using editing marks to mark up their artisanal toast menus between runs on the letterpress...

All of the suggestions here are awesome!  I know I have some negative feedback about grading "on screen" versus paper and these ideas are very helpful.

Check out the GradingHelp add-on as well. I messed around with it the other day, and it seems to mimic the editor's marks process.

Thank you for the feedback on my question.

I have another question.  If a device allows the user to use a stylus and/or draw
on the screen with one's finger, would Google Docs "record" those marks?
Would that work on any device you know of?

I'm wondering if I can help solve the immediate problem for teachers who
wish to be able to make symbols directly on students' essays.
