An interesting problem has developed on some of our Chromebooks.

We are using Samsung XE303C12 A01US.

About five Chromebooks have exhibited the same symptoms.  When you open or close them, the screen will flicker off and on.  When you slowly open and close the lid, you find the points that the screen goes totally off.  This occurs when the lid is open about 2/3.  Since it seemed like a short or problem in the video harness, I replaced it (these Chromebooks are no longer under warranty).  In addition, if you press the video harness into the metal hinge, you can turn the LCD on and off like that.

After replacing the harness, the problem still persists. This effect doesn't occur at any other time.  I've also checked all connections and they are tight.

Does anybody have an idea as to what may be going on.  I thought it was a short in the video harness but a new one yields the same results as the one that it replaced.

Thank you

I have found several harnesses that went bad right around the hinge like you describe.  When the harness doesn't correct the problem, I usually look to the board that is part of the monitor, the connections on it are easily broken even though the LCD panel itself is not cracked.  We've had that happen to a few.  A quick replacement of the screen and they are back in business.

I replaced the LCD with a new one and the problem persists.  It is almost like a short is occurring somewhere in the wiring.  I also disconnected the black Wi-Fi wire thinking that may be also causing the issue but it wasn't.

Seems I may be out of options on this one short of using another video harness.  I think, though, that won't solve the problem still.

Thank you for your help on this.
