Any word on Google tasks being enhanced to include creation of
recurring tasks like recurring calendar events? Sure love tasks, but
would love it more if teachers/students could set up recurring tasks
that had to be completed every week, month, etc.

I have heard nothing of this being added although I know a lot of requests have been made to Google.

Sadly no, I haven't heard anything about an update to tasks. As John indicated, there have been a lot of requests for improvements to the task feature, but I haven't heard anything official from Google.

I currently use GTasks on my Android phone, which gives me many more
features than Tasks on the web. I can set up reoccurring tasks as
well as set reminders for specific times. Works good for me. I'm not
sure if there is an iOS app that does the same, will look into it.

I have been using a browser extension called ActiveInBox to organize tasks.  It works well when you consider that many of my tasks originate as email messages.  I have found it very useful.  Unfortunately it is licensed by the browsers where it is installed so if I go to another computer, I don't have access to my Tasks.  I would love it if Google would incorporate the same functionality into mail/calendar.

I don't like Google Tasks so I made a Google calendar called my-tasks.
I schedule each task on whatever day as an all day event with whatever
reminders are needed. It is easy to move them around. I've done this
for years now and it works well.

I use an iOS app called "GoTask" that integrates with Google Tasks. It's not as sophisticated as the Android app that Dee mentioned, but it has a nice interface. Here's the link:  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gotasks-google-tasks-client/id389113399?mt=8

My personal favorite is an app called Google Tasks Organizer (it's on andriod, not sure for iOS). It has all the nesting that Google Tasks has plus recurring task abilities. It also creates a calendar that it syncs to so each task has an all day event on it's due date.
