I have been having my students create blogs using Blogger. Most do not have any problems however some are being asked for a phone number for verification before being able to create their blog. We are not allowed to provide phone numbers. Does anyone have a way around this phone number request?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Hey all,

I was having the same issue too. We dont have GAFE yet and it'll take forever for the admin. to get around to approve it. I dont want to wait that long so i had students making individual accounts for gmail but  some are being asked for a phone number for verification before being able to create their gmail accounts.

Is there a work around for this issue? Will the same workaround for Mike's blogger issue for my situation?

Thanks all,

M. Ahmed

My understanding based on a recent conversation with a Google EDU rep is the blogs are outside of the EDU arena. They will function as any non EDU Google tool so will request information as they would of anyone signing up for an account. They also can’t be managed or filtered through your console or a third-party solution if you use the EDU version.

Sites are a part of the EDU tools and do offer blog features.

Yes, Blogger is not a core app in the GAE therefore is not as simple
to set up for students. It's a pain to verify a whole classroom of
Blogs. We used a tip from NewZealand, we created a blog administrator
account and created all of the student blogs with that one account
(one account can have up to 100 blogs), making the title of the blog
the students first name, we then invited the students to be
contributors to their blog (the invite only lasts a week or so before
it expires), older students we then made administrators so they could
adjust the look/style of the blog. I didn't have the verification
issue until the 30th blog and found that if I used another computer I
was able to log in and create the remaining 10 blogs that I needed.
This way the school is the actual owner of the blog and therefore, the
age requirement of 13 and over is less of a problem.

I know its not a GAE app but we have used Edublog and Kidblog.org successfully. They are safe and user friendly for kids and the teachers who are trying to learn right along with them!
