Has anyone seen a way to make comfortable the default rather than compact?  I change it to comfortable and it changes right back.

Interesting. I changed mine and it stayed...
I know that does not answer your question exactly, but had to mention that it behaved as expected for me.

From what I have read, it happens because that will be the way that the NEW LOOK will stay once Google pushes the NEW LOOK out for everyone. The same thing happens to me, and I think that it is because I forced the NEW LOOK for my entire district.

Thanks and have a great day,

Thanks guys, mine definitely does not stay and I have others complaining about it.  Maybe someone from Google will see this and take note.

Submit a support request (from an education edition).  They are usually pretty good about responding.

I'd second that.  While setting up our GAFE, I requested support and got a call back within a few hours.  When the caller identified himself as being from Google, I actually considered it may be a prank call until he repeated my problem back to me.  Good Job Google!  I think we should send them twice as much money...oh yea I forgot...I'TS FREE!...but please don't mention this go Google.

Am having the same problem on both my education account and a regular
Google mail account. Tried several browsers and it didn't seem to
make a difference. I reported it through their web site, but I
haven't noticed a fix to the solution yet. For now, I just keep
switching back to the old look. I have issues with mouseovers and
other mouse movements not working right in the new version and the
color schemes are a lot less readable than the custom color scheme.
Also, am having trouble getting used to the symbols on the buttons in
place of words. I've talked to some other Google Mail users and I'm
not the only one with that issue. Google does have an option to let
them know why you prefer the old style, but I don't think any of my
comments has made any impact so far.

I have noticed that when I use an older version of Google Chrome or Internet Explorer it does not save the preferences, What browser are you using?

Don't know about anyone else, but I have IE 8.0.6001.18702CO and
Chrome 16.0.912.75. There's no way I can run IE 9 on this machine.
Our district standard is IE 8 anyway.

Does it happen in both browsers?

Found out why I can't use anything but the compact setting on any of
my browsers:
https://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&topic=1669015&answer=1670219

Apparently the option is not available to me. It says on larger
displays. However, I really don't find that very clear documentation
to indicate that provided selections (that are clickable and
checkable) do not work. I wish they had documented this better. I
also wish they had come up with a way to make the option available to
everyone, not just some people. I have a 19 inch monitor. That's not
really that small when the last time I went monitor shopping (4 or 5
years ago) 16 and 17 inch monitors were considered big.

Interesting.  However, the size problem is probably not related to the size of your monitor but to the resolution you have it set to.  A 19 inch monitor could be set low to 800 by 600 or set higher to something like 1024 by 786 (or hopefully more).  Have you tried increasing your resolution to see if that makes a difference?

Sometimes the zoom on the browser isn’t set to 100%. If you have it set too high, you lose that option as well.
