It looks like Java is not supported for Chromebooks and it sounds like it probably won't be any time soon. I know the web is going the way of HTML5 sites but I see potentially quite a few educational websites that still use java for game-like programs. Does anyone have an alternative or way to install java? I saw on one msg board you may be able to go in dev mod and do something but then it will break other things like updating. Anyone have another safer solution?

I don't think so. Java is a plugin, and a poor one at that. The best solution is probably to vet as many of your educational websites on a test chromebook and communicate those discrepancies as early as possible...

Crappy answer I know, but I don't expect Google to bend on this one. -Joe

Thanks, yeah java does not work on chromebooks. Some info I found said it's because of security and they just don't want to be running it and some say it's because oracle is currently suing android/google. Either way it doesn't look like it's coming any time soon.

You guys are both correct. I went out to the Googleplex in February for a Chromebook event and this question came up. Google will not be supporting Java due to security and resource issues. They are putting all of their eggs in the HTLM5 basket. Google is actively working with educational content creators to migrate their content from Java to HTLM5. Sadly, it's going to take a while for this to happen.
