I am looking for some help of how to set up my district chrombooks to be able to print to my network printers.  Right now the printers are being deployed from a windows print server and going through google help I haven't been able to find how to disperse these printers to the chromebooks.  Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You need to create a Google Cloud print account (we use cloudprinting@) and log into Chrome on your print server using that account. Then, create groups (nested groups will NOT work, you need groups of individual users, we have one called "cloudprinters" that is comprised of all active faculty and staff, updated as needed via GAM) and share the printers that are installed on the server via Cloud Print with these groups. You'll need to make yourself an owner of the group and "check in" the printers for all users to see them.

Then, when anyone in this group logs into a Chromebook they will have that printer available via cloud print.

In theory it sounds great, but this is one of the few things about the chromebooks that hasn't been perfect, as the cloud print service is definitely not as reliable as it should be. We have to remember to restart the service (the print spooler service in windows server) and/or turn cloudprinting off and re-enable it via Chrome.

I'd also like to add that our teachers seem to be wanting to print less with the Chromebooks.  One group of 5th grade teachers commented that they were very close to a paperless classroom using the collaborative tools in the CB.

For what it's worth...

I am not sure if this is new or if I just happened to stumble upon it, but I found the following tool yesterday:

Score - that's an official (beta) version of a tool that used to be a DIY compile from Chromium. Just downloaded and installed, and it essentially replicates the setup I described before but with the Chrome print service running at the system level, not the application level.

Thanks!

It has been a long day.   Where is the link to download the service to install?   I followed https://tools.google.com/dlpage/cloudprintservice but I could not find the button to download the installer.  The graphic is unclickable for me at the moment.

You're not the only one - the link will only show from a Windows machine of some sort. I needed to download from our print server itself.

Thanks, JP for replying offline.  Just proves the value of the Group.

I have the cloud print service running on our Windows 2008 R2 print server, and the Google Cloud Print Service is running and registered. My Groups are not nested for the domain, but we do have sub-orgs broken down by grad year. Our shared printers are not showing up for users. I could not find where JP wrote you must " 'check in' the printers for all users to see them." Maybe that is the problem??

Thanks,
Ted

So you need to share the printer with a Google Group, and make sure that the group is a Group comprised of individual accounts/addresses (nested groups won't work). In this group, put all the folks that you want to see the printers as members but also add yourself or a domain admin as owner. Then when you share the printer (just delete and re-add it if you'd shared it already) you as the group owner will get an email asking you to accept the sharing invite on behalf of the group. Click yes and presto.
