Having problems setting up a sub-organization if Chromebook devices as public kiosks. We would like to limit the Chromebooks to a list of websites and block everything else. The Blacklist Exception list does not seem to be working correctly.

-----------

Device Management->Chrome->Device Settings

Kiosk Settings = Allow Public Session Kiosk

Auto-Launch Public Session = Yes

Device Management->Chrome->Public Session Settings

URL Blocking - URL Blacklist

http://*

https://*

URL Blocking - URL Blacklist Exception (example)

http://www.OurPrettySafeWebsite.com

http://www.AnotherOkWebsite.k12.az.us/

-------------

Unfortunately, the Blacklist exceptions come up as blocked. I have checked "chrome://policy" on a Chromebook to confirm the blacklist and exceptions.

The Google help docs don't say to use http://* https://* for the block list, but just the asterisk * in the block field, then include the sites you do want to allow in the Blacklist Exception list -- did you already try this? I don't have a testing chromebook handy or I'd try it myself to see if it makes a difference. Also what version of Chrome are your kiosk-group machines running?

Hope that helps
Blair

Thanks. Yes, I did tried putting just an asterisk in the block field first. It blocked everything including the exception list.

Chrome version 39.0.2171.96

I tried the setting as you described and they seemed to work fine for me.... One thing that i found made it work a little better is if i only included the base domain...
For example instead of http://www.schoolinsight.com i just put schoolinsight.com instead so if the site redirects to secure and/or a subdomain it would be included in the unblock...  Obviously this would not be suggested for something like youtube.com, but maybe it would be worth a try on your part?

Let me know!

Thanks,

Unfortunately, using the base domain did not fix the problem for me. It is useful to know that it is working elsewhere though. Most likely there is something else in our settings that is an issue.

An update for our viewers at home...

It is working now. First problem is surprisingly long propagation times. Second problem was a redirect by the white-listed URL. The exception list needed both URLs.
