with a recent Google update, it seems the menu bar that used to be present when Gmail was open (where you could select Drive, Calendar, etc,) has disappeared.

What do I need to change to get it to reappear for my users?

Hi Mark,

That navigation is now gone.  I made a video for my teachers http://youtu.be/qU324EaD8S0 that may help.

There is a Chrome Extension Called "Proper Menubar" that will bring it back for now: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/proper-menubar/egclcjdpndeoioimlbbbmdhcaopnedkp It's not exactly like the one we were used too, but may be helpful as your users transition to the "9 dot box".
Since it is a Chrome extension, this only works in the Chrome browser.

This is an interesting blog post on the change.  Until I read it, I couldn't understand why they did it, but after reading the article a lightbulb went off and I realized that "9 dot box" is exactly the same icon as the "App Launcher" on the Chrome Book and now it makes sense. My guess is this is where you will be able to access apps from the webstore associated with your account (outside of the "Google Standards") in the near future.

And the dots on the bookmark bar on the Chrome browser. And the new log in box? Seems like they're trying to integrate Chrome browser accounts and logging into the gapps account similar..chromebook, chrome browser, gapps..all coming together..

The only thing I don't like about the new navigation system is that the Apps Launcher in the Chrome bookmark bar doesn't open what you click on in a new tab. The "Dot Menu" that replaced the black menu bar does open selections in a new tab. I think both should be the same and open selections in a new tab.

Just follow these four simple steps:

1. Type chrome://flags into your browser's address bar.

2. Search for the option labeled "Enable Instant Extended API."

3. Change its setting from "Default" to "Disabled."

4. Restart your browser.

That's it; you'll now be back to the regular old Chrome "New Tab" page setup.
