Thanks for sharing Joel. For anyone interested, here's a link to full step-by-step directions on how to remotely disable Chrome devices:

Also, here are the results from an in-depth study of 1:1 device theft in k-12 schools:

Lets put ourselves in the shoes of a thief.  I just stole a computer from someone and all of a sudden, it says "This device has been stolen from ABC School District.  Please return to 123 Acme Street."  Am I going to return it or am I more likely to trash the thing.

I prefer GoGuardian's approach.  Move the device to an OU where the device becomes completely usable to the thief, no login required.  That OU has actually launched an App in Single App Mode that looks just like ChromeOS and acts just like a public session.  The difference is that there are extensions installed on the browser that capture keystrokes, geolocation, and take screenshots and camera shots and send them to the device owner so they can actually recover the device, rather than just prevent someone from using a stolen device.

This feature is included in the price of their filtering service.  This is one service that I am more than happy with and is well worth the $5 - 7 dollars a year per device that we are paying for it.

I'm not sure the price of recovery software is worth it. I can buy a lot of chromebook replacements for $22,000 a year, which is the difference between GoGuardian's $6 (average) per device cost and my current $2 per device web filter cost.

I like GoGuardian's approach as well. They aren't aware that we're tracking them so they go about doing as they normally would (most time logging into facebook :) ).

I do like the addition of this feature though because I can see it being useful in other instances. Ex: student leaves district, doesn't return chromebook..we put up a message saying hey give it back. It's a promising addition and it's going in the right direction.

My guess is that googles TOS will never allow an administrator to track someone, even a criminal without them knowing.    GoGuardian's method should scare net admins, as it gives them the ability to remotely turn on the webcam without the end user knowing.   (Just mark it as stolen and it takes a picture the next time it is used). I remember a case a few years ago that caused quite a uproar.

Hey Andrew!  I just wanted to let you know that I don't believe it would cost you that much.  I'm not sure how many Chromebooks you have, but, I have a feeling the cost would be much, much less than that.   How many chromebooks do you have?

It is monitored extremely closely to ensure this does not happen.

According to the numbers he provided, you can extrapolate 5500 Chromebooks, which equates to $4.20 per Chromebook Per year.

Thanks, Stephen!  This is why I adore you.  Plus, if there are referrals or multi-years, or other discounts that are applicable, it would be even lower.

I agree completely with Bjorn and Andrew. As we develop new policies around student data privacy and security, we would never choose to use a product that would allow for remote webcam or microphone use on ANY district devices. The privacy risks and implications far outweigh any potential benefits, no matter what safeguards are put in place. Webcam and microphone access is often one of the questions and concerns that our parents often have as we roll out our Chromebook 1:1 initiative.

Because of the relatively low-cost of Chromebooks, I don't see the purchase of a recovery application to be worth the cost.

I can understand your hesitation and concern completely.  We do not at all allow microphone access, and webcam access can be disabled.  Once these things are disabled, they have to have district approval from two different administrators to turn them back on.  We take student data privacy and security extremely seriously!  We monitor these things all day long to ensure nothing is being used in a way it should not be.
