Good Afternoon all,

After a meeting with my IT staff about our GAFE accounts and soon to be released Chromebook deployments, I was hoping to reach out to the communities to see how you have successfully resolved/handled some of their concerns.

What convention are you using for student passwords?  Our current AD environment uses kids birthdates as the password for logging into computers.  I dont want to use this for GAFE for obvious security concerns regarding data and kids logging into others email accounts for cyberbullying, etc.

Who is responsible for resetting passwords for GAFE accounts in your school or districts?  Do teachers have the ability to reset passwords for students?  If so, have you run into any issues with teachers or site staff being able to reset passwords?  We are a district of 2K teachers and 38K kids. The goal is to minimize downtime for kids using the tools and diminishing the impact on our help desk/limited IS team.

What is your organizational structure for Chromebook deployment?
We had envisioned:
Devices
        Sites
               Cart #1
               Cart #2
               Cart #3
               etc

Our thoughts with this granularity is a site wanting to pilot a paid app from Marketplace or wanting to use a set of Chromebooks in kiosk mode while allowing others to be fully functional, we could push an app to specific set of carts and be able to lock a set of carts to kiosk mode.

I am interested in hearing your stories, successes and mistakes that we can learn from as we move forward.

Thanks!

Wayne

What convention are you using for student passwords?  We use a standard password for k-4.  Beginning in 5th grade, we have the students set their own passwords.  Causes a little problem, but quite frankly the students remember their passwords better than staff.

Who is responsible for resetting passwords for GAFE accounts in your school or districts?  Do teachers have the ability to reset passwords for students?  If so, have you run into any issues with teachers or site staff being able to reset passwords?  I have not set teachers with the ability to reset passwords, but that is going to require a very detailed Organization set up, unless you are going to have teachers in a building/grade level have access to change the passwords of any student in that OU.

What is your organizational structure for Chromebook deployment?  It follows the same OU I have set up for staff/students:
Domain --then broken down by staff, students, chromebooks into --  building -- gradelevel

I believe there is a Google/Outlook document.  Where it says how to set your gmail to make it act like Outlook.  Anyone have that?
