Frequently Asked Questions

Are there plans for any future GTAs?
When and where is the next GTA?
Will there be a GTA in my area?

Can the GTA come to my area?
My organization would love to host the GTA...

The GTA is a train-the-trainers event offered only at Google offices for educators who must apply to attend. However, Computer Using Educators (CUE), the non-profit organization responsible for producing the GTA, is now able to offer a similar experience (for other educators) to any client organization willing to host and pay for the event (or willing to host the event and let participants pay for it individually). These Google Workshops for Educators include induction into an online community for all participants (but participants do not become Google Certified Teachers). You can learn more about the Google Workshop for Educators program at the sites below.

General Information (for Planners): http://www.cue.org/google

Is there an online version of the GTA?

The GTA is a face-to-face event where participants are immersed in the Google workplace and the Google culture. Face-to-face networking and collaboration is a critical part of the very social full-day experience. We have considered offering something similar online, but at this point in time support for that program does not exist. In the meantime, the current application process is open to anyone, including educators out of the area, out of the state, or even out of the country (with the understanding that Google doesn't cover travel or lodging).  Watch the Google for Educators site (see below) for details on additional events in the future. Sign up for the newsletter in the upper right hand corner of the page to have updates sent to you. http://www.google.com/educators/

That being said, Computer Using Educators (CUE), the non-profit organization responsible for producing the GTA, is now able to offer a similar online experience to any client organization willing to pay for the workshop (or willing to promote the workshop locally and let participants pay for it individually). These online Google Workshops for Educators include induction into an online community for all participants (but participants do not become Google Certified Teachers). Can I apply if I’m an administrator (educational leader), librarian, or para-educator?
Can I apply if I provide technical support for education?
Can I apply if I work in higher education?
Can I apply if I work for an education non-profit?
Can I apply if I am an education consultant?

Though the focus is on K-12 educators, we are also interested in seeing applications from those who are in a position to influence many K-12 educators. The GTA is designed as a train-the-trainers event, with the hope that participants will return to work and share with their colleagues. So applicants are often accepted from individuals in a variety of roles (not just teachers) and from institutes of higher education, non-profits, or other organizations in a position to provide professional development to K-12 educators. If you feel like you meet these criteria, then you are encouraged to apply.

Can Pre-K or early childhood educators apply?

The event is focused on k12 educators - or those in a position to influence k12 educators, such as librarians, administrators, professional developers, or even those at institutions of higher ed who may train k12 educators. However, there are no hard and fast rules about who we accept. So far, we've never accepted a pre-k teacher, but other exceptions have been made - and we recognize that students' early years are particularly influential in their long term development. In general we are looking for innovative educators who will make an impact with their students - and with their colleagues. If you feel like you fit this description, then you are encouraged to apply.

Can I use copyrighted music in my application?

Your use of media within the video needs to fall within the bounds of fair use (but we do not provide legal advice on this issue). That being said, you may find that YouTube automatically scrubs copyrighted audio from your video regardless of your fair use interpretations, so be sure to test your video before submitting the URL.

Can I submit an application using Voicethread, Glogster, Animoto or other services?

Use of YouTube or Google Video is not a strict requirement for your application. If you feel another service would be the best submission for your application, you are welcome to use it. That being said, a service that builds your video for you (such as Animoto) may not make as much of an impression on the scoring committee as one that is edited in a more thoughtful and meaningful way.

How can I improve my application?
How can I do better next time?

We don't offer feedback on individual applications, but can share some general information. The application process is very competitive and many more applicants are considered  "acceptable" than can actually be invited. A successful application shines in all areas: the teaching experience, the technology experience, the short answers, and the video. In addition, the selection committee looks for elements that set an applicant apart from others. Among other things, a top-rated applicant would frequently lead professional development activities for other educators and frequently utilize a wide variety of technologies. Ideally, the applicant's brief statements and video would demonstrate a personal spark, creativity, or unique characteristic that would contribute to making the Google Certified Teacher community engaging, diverse, and highly professional.

What's the difference between a GCT and a Google Apps Education Certified Trainer?
Google Certified Teachers are selected from an application process to attend the Google Teacher Academy to spend a day learning about using Google tools. There are a limited number of GCTs based on the frequency of the GTAs and the application process. GCTs are not listed publicly by Google nor endorsed specifically by Google to provide training for schools. Google Apps Education Certified Trainers are individuals or organizations who complete an application process, including a set of 6 exams, and are listed on the Google Apps Education website and in the Google Apps Marketplace. The purpose of the certification is for schools to identify and select individuals or organizations to deliver professional development or training about Google Apps. The process is limited by application qualification but there is no imposed limit on the number of Certified Trainers.

We are holding a week long google educators summit on our campus this next July. Is this something we should consider working with google to include or incorporate GTA?

We are looking for a trainer to come onsite to our school in Sacramento to work with our teachers in Google for Educators training,  possible 2 half day sessions.  We moved to Google Apps for Education this school year and also using Haiku LMS.  Are you aware of any trainers?  We need fairly basic training.

Thanks.

Hey Lori!

We have a directory of Google Apps for Education Certified Trainers who you can contact and have lead training at your school. Several are also versed in Haiku I believe. You can see the directory and check out their Marketplace profiles here: http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/edu/trainer_directory.html

Regards,
Dana

Hi Craig. Google My Classroom (googlemyclassroom.com) has just launched a parallel initiative to help educators globally pool original Google Classroom K-12 lessons, activities and resources. This may be a route you want to pursue to learn the ends and outs of Google Classroom while preparing for exams, if that's still an interest.
