Hello helpful google-ites.  I'm looking for an answer to the following:

I have to scan student ID's for kids entering and leaving a dance.  I can do this with an RF scanner plugged in and an excel spreadsheet open on my computer.  I know that this also works in a google spreadsheet.  Is there a way for it to work in a form?  I'm thinking a form could be submitted with a scan along with a couple of pull down menus- IN/OUT, FR/SO/JR/SR, M/F  or something along those lines.

I don't have real IDs to play with yet, so I don't know if the scanner will eventually populate the sheet with more data than just a number.  I'm using WAVE ID, AIR ID from RFIDeas.

Thanks!

A scanned can be programmed to pull in a number and consistently hit a combination of characters, bu most are pretty dumb and will do the same set of commands every time and use no logic.

We use an IntelliScan handheld USB scanner to scan serial numbers. It works with our Inventory Google form. Just make sure you're clicked into that field, and scan. (That's how it works for us, anyway.)

You should be able to make this work! Great idea, BTW.

Agreed ... those scanners don't have much going on.  The scanner will scan a barcode and return (say) the student ID.  If you have an existing list/spreadsheet/data source that matches student ID to other info, then you have some room to work with.

What you may want to do is scan into a Spreadsheet that uses a lookup of some sort (many ways to do this) to populate name, grade, gender etc from a list you've already created.

Are you using a "smart" scanner, that has Win CE or the like built in?  I suspect not, or you would have mentioned it ... those can have more functionality built in, but with a dumb scanner, I think you're looking at one scan, giving you one field, then use that field to pull in other info.
