I am wondering if others have experienced this problem over the past couple of days. If so, here are some handy instructions...  -Joe

Yesterday, I heard from a teacher that some of his students were running into problems accessing Google Docs because they were being redirected to a page with the address about:blank (a blank white page).

The same day a teacher experienced the same problem. Today another teacher reported that she was unable to get into Gmail because of the same problem.

This problem seems to be caused by extensions that have somehow managed to get installed to the Chrome browser.

How to fix this:
  1. Type chrome://extensions into the address bar of the Chrome browser and press Enter to go to the Chrome Extension management page.
  2. There, look for any suspicious-looking extensions (particularly that are game-related, such as GameszBlox or Game Aims Advertising.
  3. Click on the Disable box for any suspicious extension (one at a time). After disabling the extension, check to see if the problem has been fixed. If so, click on the trash can item to delete the extension that is causing the problem.
  4. Disable any other extensions that seem suspicious.

We experienced that with some game extensions as well as some adblock type extensions.  We removed the extensions, then removed the student profile from the chromebook.  When they logged back in, all was back to normal.

I saw several posts on other lists that described the same issue.  Something changed in the way those extensions interact with chrome I'm guessing.

I am reconsidering my choice to allow my high school students to have some freedom over which extensions they choose to use.  Just too many buggy ones right now.

Our fix is to go to Settings>>Show Advanced Settings>>Reset Settings. Then restart the Chromebook

Has anyone escalated this to the GooglePlex?

Are you saying that "escalation" is an alien concept for Google? -Joe

lol. no.

What we are seeing is that the extensions are named differently per user, and the ID is also different.

resetting settings or extensions clears up the problem, but it's repetitive and a nuisance.

Im wondering if anyone has alerted Google Support that this is rampant?  That's all.
