Hi All,

Stephen Konig from Google contacted me and informed me that the Chat service must be enabled for Chrome Remote Desktop to work in Apps.  Good to know and I can confirm that this works.

With CRD working in our domain, there are some new doors open (mostly for remote support), and I think the tool will prove to be really handy.

If anyone is curious about how this works with Chromebooks, here goes:

- You can access your Macs or PCs from CRD on a Chromebook
- At present, you can not initiate a Remote Assistance session from a CB (though it says rather clearly that this functionality is coming: "this feature is not yet available for Chromebooks ... stay tuned")
- At present, you can not control a CB remotely from a PC or Mac (also seems to be coming)

We are implementing 40 Chromebooks this year and some of my faculty are worried about missing Apple Remote Desktop functionality, where they can observe what students are doing from afar.  If/when Chrome Remote Desktop comes to Chromebooks, and teachers can remotely control/watch CBs, this may help some teachers who prefer this method of student overviewing/overlording.

Why might we want to access PCs or Macs from a Chromebook?  Well, for one, you can travel with your Chromebook but access servers/user computers at school if you need to.  For non-Chromebook friendly websites, such as Aleks, you could theoretically have students access other computers from their Chromebooks, and use Aleks from there.  This is largely impractical since it basically requires 2 computers per kid.  In a rare set of circumstances this may be useful.  I don't think CRD supports terminal services or machines with multiple simultaneous logins yet.

Hope this helps someone.

Joel

PS: Anyone try the Aviary suite of Chrome Web Apps?  Very impressive.

I have played with Chrome Remote Desktop and it works great.   You should also check out Installfree and installfree's rndr.   InstallFree will virturally run LibreOffice or MS Office (which will eventually cost), and for those websites that require IE that is where the rndr extention works great.   Be warned that rndr is a type of proxy so it will bypass your content filter settings, but there is some settings in rndr that as a manager you can block certain sites and x rated is blocked by default.

I did a podcast with them recently if you want some more info: http://www.google-weekly.net/2012/06/gwpodcast-33-rndr-nexus-installfree.html

They have made some advancements even since the podcast, so they are really actively developing the product.
