Good afternoon!

We currently restrict application and extensions on our chromebooks, we would like to allow themes to be installed. Has anyone found an easy way to do this?

Thanks

You need to be careful with the themes as there are some inappropriate ones. We actually allow MOST apps and extensions but block themes

How are you blocking the themes? I don't see a spot in gafe for it.

We allow all apps except for what we block.. See below (The ones that I have blocked are all Proxies).  There is an exception.  If a student is off task, they get thrown in to a "PenaltyBox" OU that limits what they can access.

Here are our PenaltyBox settings.

The PenaltyBox Whitelist is as follows:

chrome://policy

chrome://apps

chrome://settings

chrome://chrome-urls

chrome://version

chrome://omnibox

chrome://plugins

chrome://imageburner

chrome://extensions

chrome://certificate-manager

chrome://dns

chrome://resources/js/il8n_template2.js

chrome://resources/strings.js

chrome://resources/js/cr.js

chrome://resources/css/chrome_shared.css

chrome://chrome-signin/

chrome://print/

google.com

code.org

typingclub.com

http://216.239.32.20/

hosted187.renlearn.com/744610/

www.writingroadmap.com/

Also, any Apps that are permitted must have their URL added to the Whitelist

James,

As a follow up, to what I think you were saying, I went back into Devices -> Chrome -> Users and disabled all the checkboxes under Apps & Extensions except Themes.  Then logging into my chromebook and refreshing the policy, I was still able to change my theme, but not install any apps or extensions.

If it isn't working for you, are you applying this policy at the sub org where these users are or a higher level?  If at a higher level, is there something set at the Users sub org(or a sub org in between) that would overwrite the higher level setting?  Also, Chrome policies don't update right away.  Sometimes it takes 30-45 minutes or more for new policies to be pushed to the chromebook.  A faster way is to go to chrome://policy and reload policies after you make a change.

I hope some of these ideas help get your situation working the way you want it to.

Is restricting themes something that is particularly important to do?  I'm asking because many people request the function to be able to block apps and extensions, but, I've never heard of a request to be able to block (or even allow) themes.
