Gmail and Google Drive will happily autocomplete email addresses from the entire GAFE account directory when composing an email or sharing a document.
But as far as I can tell, Google Contacts will only autocomplete from existing contacts when creating a group.

Is there a way our teachers can quickly and easily create Contact groups from scratch without flipping through the Directory page-by-page, typing full email addresses for every student, or constructing CSV files?

Thanks for any insight…

You can do this using Google Groups, not contact groups.

If the Groups service is on for teachers, they can create groups. As they type in student names, they will autocomplete as they type. If you have your roster beside you, you can create a classroom group in a couple of minutes!

That's more for mailing lists (like this one), isn't it?
The main goal is to be able to quickly share a file to a class (with or without edit rights) so students with Chromebooks can access it immediately.

They are also used for sharing files...

The other way I have seen this done is to create a form that requires that the person is logged into a domain account to access the form and it will capture the user name.
