We got Google Vault today but when I click on it, it says "We are sorry, but you do not have access to Vault. Please log in to your Admin Console to enable Vault. Learn more"  When I logon to my Admin Console it says it is on for everyone.   Anyone know what do I need to do?

Just saw this in the admin panel (see attached):

So some update to Vault clearly borked things.

Same here. I assumed it is a gradual  roll out. I am concerned about the problems it will cause with Google Hangouts considering we use them in our district.

A message from Google Support a few minutes ago said to try turning Vault off and back on again, then wait two hours for the system to update.

That is the best enterprise response from Google I have ever heard.  Somewhere, there are Google engineers snickering over a South Park episode.

Its so awesome...!!!

Is Google Vault for Education included for the domain or is there an additional cost per user?

Vault is now free to all GAFE domains.

Curious if anyone who's able to access Vault can actually run an archive search through the 'Matters' function. I receive an error message about adding licenses.

Try this:

Open your admin console
Click on "Billing"
Click on the Key (manage Vault Licenses) icon to the right of "Google Apps Vault"

From here, there are 3 tabs, Assigned Users, Unassigned Users and Managed Licenses.

Under Assigned Users you can assign Vault licenses by user or by Org.

Under "Manage Licenses" there's a check box to "Auto-assign the following license to all currently unassigned users and users subsequently created" which is probably what you want.

After you do this and have some users assigned to licenses, you'll be able to run archive searches.

Thanks Nick, but I actually don't have an entry for "Google Apps Vault" in my Billing section. Perhaps it hasn't been fully extended to my domain yet.

I was having the same trouble yesterday. This morning, I still do not see the entry in Billing, but I can do searches on any account.

Did you create rules or use the default?  I still can't do any searches.

I set my default rule to retain indefinitely after someone posted on this or another discussion that vault deletes all mail after the retention period even from the user's mailbox, not just what vault archived.

I set up the default, and have not set up any exceptions to the default.
  1. Go to ediscovery.google.com/discovery
  2. On the left menu, click Retention.
  3. At the top, click the grey Modify default retention period button
  4. Choose and submit
