Hi All,

Can anyone tell me what policy setting would disable the ability to switch a Chromebook to developer mode? At first I thought it was the Developer Tools policy under User settings, but changing it between always allow and never allow don't seem to change anything when I try to wipe the Chromebooks, they always say "the device owner has disabled developer mode for this device...".

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
Mark

Turn on "forced enrollment".

or *off* if you want to be able to go into dev mode.

Thanks Melissa. We have forced enrollment enabled for all our OUs with the exception of my test OU. That explains why I can wipe devices I move to the test OU. Thanks again, Mark

I was wondering about how to enable Developer Mode, too, so thanks, Melissa.

Mark, am not sure exactly what kind of wipe you are looking to do, but I have found that it doesn't have to actually go into Developer Mode. We usually follow the steps to go into and then back out of Developer Mode (esc+reload+power, ctrl+d, enter, space, enter) and the device gets wiped at the end of all that. Then we immediately do a Powerwash if necessary.

Hi Jonathan,

I was trying just the normal wipe you're describing. I personally haven't had to wipe a device in a long time, even possible since before the forced re-enrollment was made available. One of our techs mentioned that the wipe was nearly instant and that caught me off guard as I remembered it taking 10-15 minutes. After Melissa's response, I went looking for any updated wipe instructions and found that Google had added a note about how the process is different/shortened if you have forced re-enrollment enabled. I was under the impression that the CB had to transition to developer mode and back to verified mode for the wipe to be successful. I was about to tell them to stop wiping and just do recoveries when re-provisioning CBs that come back from being repaired.

Thanks,
Mark

It is a lot quicker now. In fact I have had to wipe a few devices as I set up roomsfor PARCC testing and it takes minutes. One device had accessibility set with voice comments and the only way to get it off and to boot into the Testaverde was to wipe it, then re-enroll

Are you saying that you are able to completely wipe the machine with "forced enrollment" on without a flash drive? I didn't think this was the case. Is it truly wiping the device? Not just a "power wash"?

That's where I got stuck too. Google's instructions are to wipe a deprovisioned device before reproivisioning it. I didn't think a wipe was being done when it couldn't transition to developer mode. The note in the instructions below indicates the wipe process is shortened when forced re-enrollment is enabled, but is it a real/full wipe or just a powerwash? I don't know, heck I don't know what the difference between a wipe and a powerwash is. Whatever is going on, it seems to work because the device is reprovisioned when it's re-enrolled.

I was advised that "powerwashing" no longer exists since the admin console now has control over the enrollment process.
There is a screen that should show up after a "wipe" is completed that indicates that the device is "...marked for enterprise enrollment..."
Attached a screenshot of this--I shared this pic with my teachers since we did have one student that wiped a few devices--until I tracked him down.

I can't say I know exactly what one or the other does, but my limited understanding is that wipe primarily removes user data whereas powerwash resets the user and os partitions. Last week when I was having some user profile errors with PARCC testing, wiping would not do a thing and powerwash got rid of the issue.

As for USB resets, I believe that it images the hd, including the reserved reset partition as well as the user and os partitions. No citation offered as I have absolutely no idea where I got those ideas.

I thought it was the opposite.

powerwash = like clearing the cache, local files, profiles
wipe and flash drive = I consider the same thing. And it's basically like re-installing the OS.

Wipe/flash drives are more "powerful".... this is what I *thought* anyways :)

But if a device is wiped...it's useless right? Can you tell in the admin console when a device has been wiped but not yet re-enrolled?

You very well could be right, but I don't know why enrolled devices have to go through a wipe (meaning the into and out of dev mode dance) before being powerwashed if that is the case. Seems like powerwash would be palliative at that point.

Unless maybe that first wipe is just a magic code to get to be able to Powerwash?

I don't know if I can see it in the console while between steps but will try the next time--which will be Monday. (Chromebook with vertical white/black stripes every time it hibernates)

I do know that once the Chromebook is re-enrolled, the date in the admin console only seems to show the most recent provision date. I want to track computers that are wiped to follow any trends, but am not sure if this information can be placed in the notes section of the device in the console. Currently , I have created a Google spreadsheet to track any issues.

I'm not sure is "power wash" is even an option anymore, it sounds like it's not.

But I'm wondering if that "quick" wipe is technically different than the flash drive wipe. So if there are issues with a device try the quick key combo "wipe" and if it doesn't solve the problem try the more robust flash drive "wipe".

I'm going to to and contact support and get some clarification :)

Thanks for looking into this.
To try to address some hardware issues prior to returning warrantied Chromebooks to our dealer, I have been de-provisioning/removing from enterprise to get into developer mode, then wiping and restoring provision.

It has "repaired" some issues, but maybe there is a one-step process out there.

Many thanks to the group for providing and chasing down so much info~

Subject: Re: Wiping a CB with developer mode disabled

That's where I got stuck too. Google's instructions are to wipe a deprovisioned device before reproivisioning it. I didn't think a wipe was being done when it couldn't transition to developer mode. The note in the instructions below indicates the wipe process is shortened when forced re-enrollment is enabled, but is it a real/full wipe or just a powerwash? I don't know, heck I don't know what the difference between a wipe and a powerwash is. Whatever is going on, it seems to work because the device is reprovisioned when it's re-enrolled.

Are you saying that you are able to completely wipe the machine with "forced enrollment" on without a flash drive? I didn't think this was the case. Is it truly wiping the device? Not just a "power wash"?

It is a lot quicker now. In fact I have had to wipe a few devices as I set up roomsfor PARCC testing and it takes minutes. One device had accessibility set with voice comments and the only way to get it off and to boot into the Testaverde was to wipe it, then re-enroll

Powerwash is definitely still an option with enrolled devices, but only immediately after completing that quick wipe, before setting up wifi and enrollment. It it were me returning devices, that is how I would do it. Then you don't have to deprovision & re-enroll.

Anxious to find out what support says.
