Hi all,

I was just approached by a member of our administration about not being able to send a parent announcement to more than 500 recipients due to the limitations in place from Google.  I recommended they send in groups of 500 or less, but they still need to send over 2500 emails which is again more than the allowed number of emails.

I suggested using the Google Groups option but they don't want to do that either.  They also state that ConnectEd is not the format they wish to use.

SO my question is this:  What are other school districts doing to be able to send mass mailings out to parents that does not conflict with Google's email limits?

Thanks!

The Google Certified Trainer materials recommend sending mail from multiple accounts or over the course of several days. Groups is the best solution, however.

We use Groups here and we've never had a problem.  Our all parent group has about ~3700 address in it.  Our all student group has ~4500 students.

We use a combination of google groups, an subscription service and our smtp server depending on the type, quantity, and source of the message.

I find it interesting in all these replies nobody mentioned CANN/SPAM laws. If you are emailing large numbers of people without a means by which they can unsubscribe from the communication channel, you are spamming. By doing so you run the risk of having your domain get blacklisted.

Google groups allows for recipients to unsubscribe.

Absolutely. My issue is that the answer should be how to get around Google's purposeful limitations, rather that communications of that breadth HAVE to be in some sort of comm system - alert now, mail chimp, groups, constant contact... Whatever the system, folks shouldn't be sending to groups of 500 via Gmail, much less 2500.

It looks like the CAN-SPAM act only applies to emails that are commercial in nature.

Depending on how deep you want to get, Amazon SES maybe something to check into. For new Amazon AWS accounts you can send up to 2,000 messages a day for free. Their pricing is $.10 per 1,000 messages plus bandwidth fees (http://aws.amazon.com/ses/pricing/).
