Hi All,

I had a class today to show some teachers Google Apps for Edu Forms. They were quite excited by the idea of being able to quickly survey their class, community and/or the world.

Then, 3 of the participants started seeing the menu bar grayed out in the spreadsheet so that accessing the form was not possible.

A Google search shows that other folks have had the same problem and gives reference to this page… http://knol.google.com/k/google-docs-guide-2/google-docs-help-what-to-try-when/2vcnhxffa8r42/13# When something is wrong with Google Docs. We tried a number of these solutions… Cleared cache, checked log in, rebooted computer and logged in again, rebuilt the form… all to no avail. I don’t think it would be anything like relaxing the security settings as the first form they created worked like a charm. It was when we started creating the second form that started this problem.

Any suggestions other than the one on the page linked above? Class resumes in the morning. Would be nice to have the Google Forms page behaving itself again. J

Thanks,

Cathy

Hi, Cathy! I know this is a dumb question, but are they logged in
correctly when they go to the spreadsheet? You might want to
double-check that. Sometimes I catch teachers creating a survey with
one account, but then they are logged in with a different account when
they try to edit a document. Just a thought...

I made sure they were logged in, made sure they did not log into a different account, had them sign out, close all of the open windows then log back in, even had them restart their laptops and then log in again. Still grayed out menus. :(

can we see a screenshot?  just to be clear, they were able to take the survey but unable to view the spreadsheet?

Not sure what browser you are using but the information on this page might help.  I know it's a little old but worth a try:
http://208.117.233.99/support/forum/p/Google+Docs/thread?tid=168efcb5f01d036e&hl=en

Another thing to troubleshoot is have those people access their form when logged into a machine with a guest profile account.  This is a good way to test if it's an issue with their browser settings within their profile or if its specifically their google account.

Thanks everyone. I am also going to try hardwiring the laptops tomorrow to see if that prevents this from happening again.

What browser were you using? I am asking because this happened to a teacher I was training today but not on my machine. He used IE7 and I used Chrome. Another possible reason is your network policy. Ours blocks webmail & some parts of Google Docs are routed through Gmail -- pardon this simplistic statement as I'm not really familiar with network administration jargon.

The browser was IE8 and the curious part to this is that the first form that they created worked and the other teachers had no problem. All security and network policies are set at the same level so I would not think it would have anything to do with our network policy. I also have never had this problem and have created many forms.

I just had this happen today with one of my staff. She had been using IE9
for a long time and it just started doing the same thing that you're
describing earlier today. It was even the same document that she had edited
many times before. I had her switch to Chrome and it worked perfectly.
Google docs works better in Chrome than any other browser. I end up
reminding my staff of this fact several times a year.
