Folks

We have several flat screens around the school and I want to use chromebits as digital signage for these monitors.

I've logged into my first chromebit but I can't seem to figure out how to see the device within the admin panel.

As a G-Suite for education user, do I need licenses for these devices? Maybe I have a setting turned off?

Thanks so much

To manage the devices from the admin console you need a license.

You can technically use them without for signage but then you have to physically goto each one if you ever need to change anything.

Check out kiosk mode for unmanaged devices.

Pretty much any vendor selling the chromebit should also be selling the enrollment license for $25-$30.  However, the price goes up by $8 in March.  It's the first price change since 2012, so it might seem like a lot but over the long perspective it isn't actually too bad.

If it helps, I know that CDW-G and SHI both sell these licenses.

We use 4 Chromebots on monitors about our campus and Google Sign Builder to manage our digital signage.

Yes , you need to manage the devices which means the license. I recommend you set up an OU specifically for your signage as well.

I’d be happy to arrange a call if you want a walk through of what I’m doing.

I am trying to do the same thing on our monitors using Chrome Remote Desktop. But we cannot get it to install on our Chromebook for the TV.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

Wait...  What are you trying to do with Chrome Remote Desktop?  Make digital signage?  If so, that would be the wrong tool for the job.  Look into Chrome Sign Builder, instead.

I am just looking to have some Google Slides show. We were using Risevision but it is no longer free.
I will investigate Chrome Sign builder, I have never heard of it!
Thank you so much!!

Hi Marci,
You can still utilize RiseVision for free.  Your content just needs to be switched to url mode versus presentation mode within RiseVision.  DGF schools will utilize multiple Google slides (individual schools, lunch menus, etc) to display content.  Place the URL link with a time setting at the end of the URL and you will be good.   We had to make this adjustment a few days ago after RiseVision made the licensing change.  Google Sign will work OK if you don't have multiple slides to pull from.

Thanks John! I will look at it again. I do not find the program very intuitive so I was hoping Google could solve that.  I will look again.

John, Chrome Sign Builder works just fine with multiple slides.  I have different Slides files associated to different OUs and have even scheduled special events (e.g. playing a video from YouTube in full screen during lunch on a certain date.)  It will let you set the delay between slides, whether it should restart/loop over the slide deck, and how often to reload the file (i.e. check if there is a change in the content.)
