All,

I am using Sonicwall for my content filtering and firewall.  It is pretty easy to setup Youtube for education.  The one issue that remains is that if student or anyone attempt to got to https://youtube.com it will allow them access.  Sonicwall only rewrites the header on http and not https.  They advise blocking access to https for youtube.com but this also effects drive and other google services.  It appears that google uses the same ips and server for most of their services and by blocking https traffic to youtube you also mess with the other services.  I talked to Sonicwall and their only work around was a proxy server that redirect 443 to 80 for youtube.  I don't have a proxy server setup.  Has anyone had any luck with this?

I am not familiar with Sonicwall specifically, but it would be fairly easy to do this using an extension. To be clear, are you trying to block all access to that url, or only directly on the youtube website.  Should embedded videos still work or not?

We just did the same thing with our Sonicwall and ran into the same issue.  The issue with blocking https is that it blocks ALL https and you have to whitelist all the https traffic that you want to allow, which was not worth the time or effort.  Honestly, we are just allowing it will deal with incidents as they occur.  We did however create a specific content filter policy specific to our High School and only allow YouTube for Schools at that level.

All,

Wondering if you are also having problems implementing Google Safe Search by Sonicwall at this time? If you are logged into Google, Safe Search is not implemented by the Sonicwall.
