Hi Everyone

We are curious if anyone is using the Acer Touch screen version of Chromebook in their schools? If so what has been your experience with it? Does it break easier? shorter battery life? Does it will a need or is it really kind of a waste? Have you used any particular apps with it that you can’t use without the touchscreen? I am interested in both positive and negative experiences.

Thanks in advance

~Anne

I have one that the school bough to play with, and have a touch-screen chromebook that I use.   The actual touch is not worth it at this time.   I use it mostly when I am surfing the web to scroll up or down.    As for using it inside an application I personally have not found it to be much use.

I have not priced it out, but I bet the replacement screen is cost more.

I know that Temple ISD in Texas is using the Acer touchscreen. I believe they've had great success. Luann Hughes is the tech director there.

Please ignore any comical autocorrections! :-)

We just purchased 200 of them for our 3-8th grade classrooms about a month ago. I personally use one as well and love the option to use it as a touch screen for certain uses. It definitely takes some retraining of your brain to use it as a touchscreen. I use the touch feature mostly when I'm researching online to navigate web pages easier. We'll see how it holds up. I am concerned that our students won't be gentle when touching the screen and we'll have more breakage, but we'll have to wait it out.

The big reason we went to a touch screen device is that is what students are familiar with and we wanted to provide a relative medium for them to do schoolwork. For $100 more than our other model of Chromebook, and $150 less than an iPad we're hoping this multi-function device serves our needs.

We deployed about 1,400 of them this year.  I decided to get the touch screen mostly for forwards-compatibility, not because I saw an immediate use for it in the current environment.  I was surprised to see that the students started using it immediately. They constantly interact with the touch screen for normal, everyday usage without even thinking about it.   Just goes to show that us old-timers shouldn't make these kinds of decisions based on our own comfort level or usage patterns, we have to observe how our students operate.
