Hi Everyone!
I am senior middle grades education major and I will be
student teaching in the Spring. I would like to know what
rules you (teachers) use in your classroom, the rationale
for these rules and the consequences for breaking the
rules. You can email me at: deet...@usa.net
I would appreciate any assistance. Thanks -- Denise

This may seem a little radical, but...
how about asking the students what they consider appropriate classroom
standards or behaviour: ways to speak (volume, tone, vocabulary), ways to
move (within the class, in and out of the class), what are manners and which
ones should we use, and making a list of goals for the period that you are
there (learn an algorithm, to use the % sign on the calculator correctly,
write two pages of creative language and proof read it properly etc..). The
talk about consequences for those actions (nice environment, no-one
intimidated, progress noticeable, independence, smiling teacher) and also
consequences for not attaining those actions (disapproval of classmates,
failure to reach own goals- if they can't reach them no one can- ,
embarrassment, parental disapproval..). Design a four step system: one
misdemeanour= warning, second offence= write letter to parents explaining
actions for YOU to mail with a signature reply section attached, third
disregard for standards= visit the principal, fourth abuse of protocol=
parents in for conference with you and Principal. These must be supported
by the boss. You must be consistent. You must make sure these steps aren't
used for trivial occasions when a simple, "settle down NOW thank you", or
"you WILL stop that now and complete your mathematics (whatever)". You
should have a ratio of 6 to 7 positively reinforcing interactions with a
student to ONE punishment or use of negative reinforcement. The way they
speak, walk, write, comment to others, volunteer information, draw, attempt
an answer etc... etc... Admonish in private whenever possible but praise in
public every time possible. Don't be a dragon, but don't be a buddy. You are
there for a purpose: they know it and so do you so don't be a friend, but be
friendly.
Here endeth the sermon from Craig. All the very best!!

For a good Internet reference site take a look at Encyberpedia - A
Living Encyclopedia located at <http://www.encyberpedia.com>. If your a
student or teacher, it will be worth your time.
