1. EDITORIAL - Shel Ritter
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The first bit of news is that the files for the TVRC web page have been set
up on my new Internet provider's server at:
WWW Home Page: http://www.world2u.com/~shel/tvrc.htm
I will be leaving the old files at the Compuserve address for a while, but
I've set up a link from the home page there to the new site.
The past couple of months have been a pretty busy one for me. Besides
maintaining and the web site, the two TVRC ChoralNet digests, the new TVRC
Treble Choral Music Conference and trying to keep up with replies to mail
generated by the TVRC web site, I had been researching components for a new
computer system I had been planning on building. Up to that point I had
been using a friend's old 486SX33 PC for several months. Things became a
bit hectic last month when my friend called and told me he was going to pick
up his computer so his daughter could use it for a summer college course.
At that point I had to step up by efforts to determine what the best
components would be for my needs, and where I could get them at the best
prices. At the same time I had to spend hours backing up seemingly
countless files that been accumulating in the 486 since January, quite a
chore in itself.
The assembly of the new system went well, and within a week I had reloaded
most of my original software and old files. The best thing is that I've
been able to load some memory intensive programs such as graphics and audio
programs I wasn't able to use on with the old 486. Luckily I was able to
keep my weekly processing of the ChoralNet digests on schedule, and have now
been able to add a couple of features to the TVRC web site.
One of the things I've been the most eager to get onto the web site are
sample audio files from some of the new CDs that a few people have been kind
enough to send me. Two in particular are the VIATGES CD by Cor Vivaldi from
Spain, sent to me by one of the members of their board of trustees, Jofre
Tremoleda, and the other, JUBILATE DEO by the Cincinnati Boychoir that was
sent to me by my Internet friend Eric Sakurai whose younger son Cameron is
now in the choir's training choir. A few days ago I managed to get my
scanner up and running and scanned the cover of the two CDs into graphic
files and made about a 50 second sound file from the ALL MY SORROWS track
from the Cor Vivaldi album. I've set up the Cor Vivaldi graphic and a list
of the tracks on a new web page with a link to the sound file so that people
with multimedia equipment on their computers can download the file and play
it offline, In a few days I hope to have a similar page set up for the
Cincinnati Boychoir's CD.
The other thing I've been working on since I have the 'fire power' of this
new system has been learning how to work with the Netscape table/frame
format to create web pages with photos and graphics formatted in more of a
magazine style. Just the other day I managed to set up a test index page
with three choir photos, a new background style and text that wraps around
either side of the photos. The test page can be found at:
http://www.world2u.com/~shel/test/idx11.htm
I would really like to hear from people about how the page looks to them on
their systems. It's hard to set up web pages that look right on all of the
different system configurations that exist out there. The best way for me
to find out that things aren't working right is if you would take a moment
to drop me a note telling me what looks good or what doesn't seem right
On that page I've also included a link to the Netscape site where people can
download test versions of the 'table capable' Netscape web browsers. The
current Netscape Navigator 2.02 will only let you try it for 30 days, though
you can download their newer 'gold' version 3.0 beta 4 which has real time
audio capability as well as supporting the new Java protocols which enable
more multimedia functions something I'm still learning about myself.
However you'll need Win95 and a fairly powerful system to run this new gold
version of Navigator. Contact me if you would like a copy of the older
froms capable version of Netscape Navigator ver1.2.
In the past few months I've begun archiving the TVRC ChoraList and TVRC
ChoralTalk digests on the web site, as well as messages to the TVRC Treble
Choral Music Conference. You'll find links to those archives from the main
index pages. For people looking for treble choir repertoire, I've added an
enormous list of compositions assembled by Monica Hubbard, west cosat
chairperson for the ACDA Western Division Repertoire & Standards Committee
on Women's Choirs. Monica has researched and compiled a good number of the
compositions from the standard treble choir repertory since women's choirs
share the same vocal range. There is also a file of compositions on the
TVRC web site I had begun at one point to extract from the TVRC database of
recordings.
A couple of months back I was contacted by Eric Taylor, an enthusiastic
collector who tracked down the MARITO & JORGE recording I had mentioned in a
past newsletter. Eric contact a gentleman in Argentina via the
soc.argentina Usenet group who informed him that the wonderful recordings of
tradition songs from Latin America sung by the duo in the early 1970s are in
fact still for sale in Argentina. At this point we're still waiting for
more information on the name of the recording company and how the might be
contacted, but I'm quite exited just to know that these fine recordings and
still available.
The TVRC Treble Choral Music Conference started out last April with a lot of
feedback on the initial message I had posted from "The Phantom of the
Cathedral" on the subject of the Anglican church's new policies concerning
the formation of girls' choirs in many of its churches and cathedrals. I
have to offer an apology regarding the conference however. The task of
keeping up with responses to the posts there as well as all the other
aspects of TVRC became a little bit more than I found I had time for. I'd
like to encourage people reading the list, those who have either subscribed
or who read the list on the TVRC web site, to participate in the conference
by sending a message to the conference with any thoughts they might have in
response to any of the messages there. I'll try my best to respond to
messages sent there to me personally, but it would really be great to see
more people continuing dialogues begun by others in the conference. To send
a message to the conference, just address your message to:
TVRC Conf <sh...@world2u.com>
That way it will be easier for me to sort my personal mail, and mail to the
conference. Send a note to me if you would like to have your name added to
the mailing list for the conference.
That's about it for now. If you don't see the materials in this newsletter
that you had sent me to include, please send a note and remind me. I'll
send out anything I've forgotten, or any new materials, relatively quickly
in a smaller TVRC News Bulletin.

3. IMOGENE CHORAL
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
[Last December the Australian based Imogene Choral directed by Laurie
Gaffney toured several German cities and received wide acclaim The
following is Laurie's account of the choir's tour. S.R.]
Our tour of Germany was a great success. We gave about 14 or so
performances of `Adventskonzerts' culminating with the Palestrina Mass
`Hodie Christus Natus Est' at the famous baroque church, St
Sylvester's, in Munich.
Throughout, we were received with the warmest hospitality and
`Gastfreundshaft'. We gave concerts at various venues in Wiesbaden and
surroundings, at the Rheingauer Dom, at the Johannisberg Castle, in
Frankfurt, Mainz, Kassel, Regensburg, Augsburg and Munich. Our reviews
gave us a terrific thrill. Much to our pleasure and amusement we were
the cause of quite some press and professional discussion - how did we
manage to achieve that sound with girls in the choir? As elsewhere,
there's still a lot of `limitation-by-tradition' in Germany.
Our principal host choir, the Wiesbaden Knabenchor was wonderfully
welcoming and supportive - we hope to be their hosts next year if they
can manage to come to Australia at Easter time. One of the highlights
for us was our visit to the Regensberger Domspatzen. We had a wonderful
evening together - singing a joint welcoming concert with them, then
swimming and eating and generally socialising. We also gave a
performance at the famous Regensburg Christmas Market.
Of course, the thing the kids wanted most out of their tour, was to see
snow. You wouldn't believe it, but on our 5th day, quite unseasonably,
it snowed - and these kids, so used to spending Christmas on the beach
in temperatures of 38 degrees centigrade, found themselves making
snowmen and having snowball fights in minus 10 degrees. We know this
is nothing for you northern hemisphere types, but for us it was really
something!
Our program this year will be Australia-based. We have a regular,
monthly series of concerts at the Customs House, one of Brisbane's
finest buildings. Amongst other things we will produce and perform two
shows at a major International Arts Festival for children here in
Brisbane in June. Some choristers are performing in Hansel and Gretel
and in Turandot for Opera Queensland, and we will perform Carmina
Burana with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the State Choir in
September. Touring-wise, during the year we hope to get to north
Queensland, and down to N.S.W. (New South Wales) and Victoria. There
is also a brief Asian tour in the offing but nothing confirmed yet.
We hope to tour internationally again next year - maybe Japan, maybe
your way... then again, maybe we'll stay here and explore some more of
Australia. Being independent has both joys and drawbacks - one of the
big joys is being free to decide what adventure we might like to have
next, one of the drawbacks (only minor!?) is trying to work out how to
get the money for the next adventure. Mind you, when we do have an
adventure, it's usually a beauty!
Our recording companies: Larrikin and Walsingham (the latter for the
classical recordings) have recently merged with Festival. Our
distributors in the U.S. are Allegro and, in the U.K., Topic Direct. We
go into the studio again this month and hope to have another CD
available in July, and perhaps one more before Christmas.

9. NEWFOUNDLAND SYMPHONY YOUTH CHOIR
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Newfoundland Symphony Youth Choir is a group of 84 _unchanged_ voices.
Its members are an auditioned ensemble who range in age from 11-17 years. A
Training Chorus, ages 8-12, provides younger children with a preparatory
choral experience. Formed in March 1992, this select community choral group
aims to provide a unique opportunity to develop talent in young people on
the Avalon Peninsula, to promote the choral art, and to extend our own
cultural expression through that art.
The valuing, promoting and transmitting of Newfoundland's rich folksong
culture is at the heart of the NSYC vision. To that end, the choir
performs, records, and commissions arrangements of our folksong treasury.
As part of our mission to seek understanding and empowerment through song,
the NSYC has sought to build bridges to other cultures. This outreach
involves the commitment to performance of global music. As part of this
philosophy, the NSYC undertook in February 1996 a month-long
artist-in-residency program with Professor Erkki Pohjola of Finland. This
highly successful process brought all our young singers in close touch with
folk and composed choral music of Scandinavia, and in so doing, expanded
their awareness, technique and appreciation of their own grounded
traditions.
As part of its educational vision, the NSYC partners with both the Faculty
of Education and the School of Music at Memorial University of Newfoundland
in the development of young choral educators. Rehearsals are open to
undergraduate students for observation. The centrepiece of this liaison are
the two annual choral scholarships awarded to promising young conductors,
who then apprentice with the Youth Choir and the Training Chorus
respectively for a year of mentored study and development.
In the summer of 1994, the NSYC was selected to perform at the 21st Biennial
World Conference of the International Society for Music Education (ISME)
which was held in Tampa, Florida. In addition to their own two performances
at the conference and a concert at Epcot Center, the choir was one of six
international choirs who were invited to participate in the All-World
Children's Choir, directed by Dr. Doreen Rao. this composite ensemble was
the musical centrepiece of the ISME 1994 Closing Ceremonies.
In April of 1996, Camerata, the international touring group of the NSYC (45
members) travelled to England where they performed a series of secular and
sacred concerts in Bristol and Canterbury. Central to this tour was the
connection with John Cabot's 500th Anniversary in 1997. John Cabot sailed
from Bristol in 1497 on his voyage of discovery. In 1997, the Province of
Newfoundland and Labrador will celebrate Cabot's historic voyage with the
arrival of his replicated ship, the Matthew, in Newfoundland. The choir
performed at Bristol Cathedral, the Church of St. Mary Redcliffe (Cabot's
own parish), Canterbury Cathedral, and were the first Newfoundlanders to
perform on the deck of the Matthew as she was docked at Tower Bridge in
London. In June 1997, the NSYC will play a central role in FESTIVAL 500:
SHARING THE VOICES, an international choral festival in St. John's
celebrating the 500 years' anniversary of Newfoundland's connection with
Europe. (see the FESTIVAL 500 link on the NSYC homepage - you might want to
link directly to this site on your Main Contents page)
I trust this brief summary of our purpose and record will encourage you to
place the NSYC on your website. Thank you for your kind consideration of
this request.

States, the others being the New York Philharmonic and the Kronos Quartet!
Boys' choirs participating in this festival include the Vienna Choir Boys,
the Choir of Kings College, Cambridge, the Copenhagen Boys' Choir, the
Westminster Cathedral Choir and other choirs from Germany, England and
Russia. The American Boychoir will sing at the Copenhagen Cathedral and the

My thanks to all the people who have been so supportive and responsive in
the past several months. It's been a fantastic amount of fun hearing from
so many people who have brought new choirs and recordings to our attention,
and have helped to open doors to whole new areas of this music.
