Hi,

I am a pre-service art teacher with a question for fellow teachers who are
familiar with discipline-based art education. I am wondering if you
incorporate history, criticism, and aesthetics into your curriculum? So
many teachers that I observe just cover production. Can anyone shed some
light on this area for me?

DBAE, as it is known, is basically a set of slogans peddled by the Getty
foundation and art education professors seeking tenure who want to write
articles that sound as if they have created or invented something when, in
fact, they are simply rehearsing what has been considered good practice by
many art educators since the late nineteenth century. DBAE may sound
impressive to some administrators and tenure committees, but there is really
nothing to it. The only idea is that you should teach some history and some
criticism. Whether you can do it or not depends on the school in which you
work. I once impimented DBAE in Volusia County, Florida but dropped it when
the principal complained that all the students ever did was talk about art
and they didn't paint enough. Others have had similar experience. Here in
Brown County, Illinois I have intelligent administrators so we could easily
claim to have a working discipline based art curriculum.

Hope that helps.
