I am looking for any ideas on teaching art history to grades 4-6. I would
specifically like to teach some lessons on the post impressionists or simply on
Vincent Van Gogh. Any ideas about teaching art history in general or about
these specific topics would be extremely helpful.

Thank You!

I introduced Van Gogh's The Chair and Pipe to my first grades. Gave a brief
background of Van Gogh's life. Discussed color, pattern and texture. Placed a
chair in front of the class and demonstrated drawing it in perspective. The
children then drew the chair, added a patterned floor and walls. They could
add anything they wanted to the picture (on the chair, on the walls, on the
floor). Excellent results.
E-mail me if you want any other ideas. I just finished Pop Art with my 4th
grades and they are now working on Louise Nevelson style assemblages. My 5th
grades are creating tissue collage vases after studying Louis Comfort Tiffany.
